Is this an exterior or interior installation? What do you intend to cover?

Sorry. Interior walls. Just a small mudroom/ entry way. It's an older home and I would like to cover the walls with a feature like shiplap boards

It will be more expensive than painting. However, if you are providing the labor to install and finish the cost will be in the material.

If the shiplap boards are too expensive you might want to try a 1x with installed over roofing felt paper. Hold your joints between boards to approx. 1/4". The black felt paper provides a nice dark shadow.

Shiplap siding is always a gorgeous option. I would recommend using 5/4x6 Advantage Ipe Shiplap Siding. It will have to be kiln dried to about 7% moisture content since you are using it for interior purposes. You will also need to order 15-20% more to figure for shrinkage of the material.
