It you place that behind the cooktop, you Have to consider the 6” bump out needed in the design in order to comply with the required clearances for combustibles. Quartz is not a non combustible surface. It is half plastic. Quartz will scorch behind cooktops that are too close to it. And it will burn in a kitchen fire.

Thanks for this info. The cooktop is actually on a peninsula so there is no backsplash behind it.

^^Thats going to be a world of customer complaints when it gets brown and bubbly behind those ranges. That violates fire code clearances and needed the tall back guards.

@User, we have a self-venting cooktop with a cooktop that is essentially on an island, so I'm not worried about it. I have a similar set-up in my primary home (cooktop on the island) and it hasn't caused any issues.

There is no difference in the covering of a combustible wall. You don't make a combustible wall noncombustible by covering it with tile or granite.

Every single full splash engineered stone failure posted here started at the desk of the designer, not at the manufacturer, whose instructions as to clearances weren't followed.

You can have a wallpaper backsplash without failure if you follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Hey Joseph, what do you recommend to reduce fire hazards behind a range? Do you mean the wall should be made of something like cement? We are planning on lining the wall behind the range with quartzite—it is just an ordinary drywall right now.

A 6” air gap. Unless you want to rebuild the wall with steel studs.

If the appliance manufacturer specifies 6", you need 6". If they don't, you don't.

That 6” includes the rear of the range too. Some require 12”. The cooktop has to have 6” of space between it and the wall behind it. You can’t do that with standard depth cabinets. That means deeper cabinets front to back. 30”. . A deeper hood. Custom spacers. Custom installs. Or you have to use the tall back guard. Or you have to completely rebuild the whole wall with steel studs so it’s non combustible.
