What would give this 1970’s rancher more curb appeal?

White garage door, get rid of shutters

Definitely get rid of the shutters. Maybe paint it a better color/colors. Not too keen on the beige, but don’t know what would work best.

    Your landscaping looks quite nice.

Can you post a pic that will enlarge?

    Really nice home.

Agree with white garage doors (if painted any color) and removing shutters.

If you're contemplating any structural change, you might consider adding a small gable over the entry door.

Like the landscaping. One thought: You might want to trim that highest bush in front of the door to be a flat top so at least half the door is visible.

That shrub/tree (?) in front of the three windows on the far right may be too close to the house if there is any chance it could grow large enough to impact the overhang of the house. At the appropriate time of year, you might consider moving it to the side of the house farther away from the foundation.

Agree with Jj J above - plus remove the shutters.

Please see this brief article that illustrates why your shutters don't work for your home https://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/residential-architecture-101-shutters/

Yes, removing the shutters will be an improvement. You already have the wide, white trim which is nice. The link from Denita will show how your windows aren't sized or styled right for shutters.

Here’s my thoughts... because of the very steep grade of the street and the size of the mailbox column, perhaps grow a street hedge horizontally from the column towards the increased grade to “level” the appearance of the house. Keep the hedge just under the column height. Add a vertical tree in the planter between the garage and front door. And a second tree that would step forward towards the hedge and triangulate w the one existing tree. Add some pop of color to the front door. The entry are the lips of a project.

Terraced landscaping and new steps to the front door

    Remove the shutters

remove the shutters ..trim the bush by the front door ..remove the tree on the right

From the pic, it appeared the garage door was painted brown? If that is a natural wood finish, then, especially if the front door is the same finish, don't paint it.

Your house already has a lot of curb appeal. I would suggested eliminating the tree/tall shrub on the far right side of the house. It obscures that part of the house and the window. I would also trim back the shrubs near the porch/entry. You might consider adding some color into the landscaping at various points. I don't mind the wood garage door at all. It provides some contrast with the color scheme of the rest of the house. Good luck!

I like the paint colors and the garage door color. The mailbox post looks too big and out of place with the style of the home. I would demo it. Also, was it recently landscaped? It may look better once the shrubs have grown in. The landscaping, while looking new, seems a bit chaotic. I would get a good landscape designer to swap out just a few elements to make it look more cohesive. Overall, this has way more curb appeal already than most 70s ranches.

No shutters and replacing that montlithic light post and mailbox with something less grand. Redo the landscaping with lees overgrowth near the front door so you can actually see the front door and it would be nice if we could enlarge the picture .

Not a pro. That said, I agree that eliminating the shutters would do wonders. Also, I think that this house would look really pretty in a light shade of green -- maybe a celery or sage.

Speaking of curbside, I would really clear out much of the shrubs at curbside, it’s cluttered, dstracts the eye and doesn’t add. Any landscape there should be low ground plane, with some small masses such as around base of pillar and allow good views to the house. Prune back or remove that shrub that blocks the view to front entry.

I wouldn’t change the garage doors, and especially not to white. That will be eye catching against the rest of the house and I don’t think you want your garage doors to be a focal point.

I think some terracing and new plantings would go a long way toward improving curb appeal.
