If your current washer an older model? You might want to seriously consider getting it repaired. New washers are much different than vintage, old-school models.

From what I have read, Speed Queen ruined their reputation with their 2019 model. I don't have any links right now, but one of their major dealers wrote an article saying "if you can still get the 2018 model, they're great, but don't buy a 2019 or later". They pulled his dealership for that!

Mary Elizabeth, my understanding is that only the 2018 model should be avoided. SQ reverted to pre-2018 design for the 2019 models.

My SQ is about 8 years old. It's been a solid, trouble free performer.

I haven't heard that, but that would be a very smart move if they did. I have an almost 20 year old Whirlpool Gold washer and dryer set that I love. Also, my DH can fix almost anything, so as long as parts are available, I will not let it go.

Nope. The TR7, TR5, and TR3 models still offered for 2019 and presumably beyond are the new design.

ONLY the TC5 (aka the "Classic") reintroduced for 2019 is the old design with a transmission and agitator that moves separately from the drum. And it has some limitations, one being that there is NO water level control and NO auto-sensing of the fill level. All the cycles operate at two fixed fill levels ... default being between 1/2 and 2/3 full depending on the cycle, and the Deep Wash option filling a few gallons more.

So anyone looking for the classic, classic Speed Queen has no choice but to search the used washing machine market? (Even my 8 YO machine has a reduced limit on the water level for large loads but that's easy enough to get around.)
