I'm a big fan of pot lights in the ceiling of kitchens. Pendants and chandeliers may look pretty, but they are one more thing to keep clean. I have two dogs - long haired, hairy creatures, even if they are small (16 lbs). I don't want to have to try to get my cleaning help to clean anything more and I can't. I'm a "keep it simple" gal when it comes to the kitchen - clean lines, everything easily cleaned and the fewer things that must be constantly cleaned, the better!

You can do pendants, but I would also add recessed lights to the space.

I have a vaulted ceiling in my kitchen and I don't have any pendants. There was a thread a year or two ago, on the pendants or no pendants subject, and the results were pretty much 50/50 with people who chose to add or not add pendants to a kitchen.

Hi @chispa. My original plan was to do pendants. The contractor said he could do it, it just might look odd as two fixtures would hang the same length whereas the third one would be on a lower slop of the ceiling. It would be challenging too getting the third one to be the exact same height as the other two.

Also; the entire main living space is open with the living room on the opposing wall in the picture. There is also going to be recessed lights throughout space so plenty of overhead light. Task lighting would be nice too though.

IMO pot lights in a vaulted ceiling do not provide enough lighting in a kitchen. As for the actual island if you do lighting that actually lights the island not the ceiling it is very functional lighting and I like the one you show but just make sure all the lighting is LED and in 4000K in that space

Is it feasible to add a beam over your island to accommodate three hanging pendants?

Otherwise, these fixtures below are all that I found for your conditions.

I totally agree @RL Relocation LLC and @chispa. I've flipped flopped back to three pendants.

Just use something that forces the light down, rather than clear that lets light out, that is if you are needing functional working light from these.

oh and to really make it easy chain or cord only no rods.

I agree with Patricia, I have a kitchen with a 26 ft vaulted ceiling and pot lights just disappear into the abyss (they give a little assistance but would not work as the main lighting source). For our kitchen renovation we are building out a beam over the 13 ft island to hang the pendants from so that they all hang evenly. The chains all hanging at different lengths would drive me nuts

You need pendants with chain. and EXTRA chain and wire. Or the fixture must come with a pivot and the ability for additional stem or customization on the light order.. . It would help to know the highest ceiling elevation. A 126 inch island is not HUGE. You need nothing close to an 82 inch single fixture. It will take OVER : ) Three pendants, forcing light down onto the counter would be just fine. No wider than 15 inches if three and no more than 18 to 20 if two. .

You can augment with recessed as well.

Stems won't work, they are 6'' and 12'' so its very hard to get a perfect level with that, go with cord.

All you need for stems, is what I said above, ( pivot ) and a VERY good electrician with a threader. But yes........more difficult. It is also fact that the stem has become an unfortunate trend, unless you have nine foot flat ceilings.

^^^^^ Max effort, and lots of room for errors. Jan I am agreeing with you but in the same token saying, just skip that battle. NO NEED plenty of options otherwise.

paying someone to do ALL those steps is so not worth it.

ok, Jan .............always confrontational. Even when I try to agree..................... I'm not sure how else to put it out there. PERSONALLY I WOULD NOT OPT FOR RODS. OK.

Update - went to see the renovation and the contractor had already put in the wiring for the one unit. However I had only said we were 'strongly' leaning towards it and so he very kindly agreed to get electrician back out to wire for (3) . Of note, this is not the only lighting, there are recessed canned lighting throughout the great room.

Just want to say thanks to all who chimed in and help convince me to go with three.

@denisetarantino the light fixture we ultimately went with was from Shades of Light. I believe this one is it: Classic Dome Shade Light with Chain - Large
