Need help to prep for selling house

OK. I plan to sell my house next spring/summer but there is lots of stuff in the house. Furniture I don't need (some still good, some not so good), clothes (some I want , some no), and assorted other stuff. I need help clearing it out, getting rid of what should be gotten rid of, shipping some stuff to my new house, etc. And then sell the house.

Where do I find this pre-selling help? I need help getting it ready to bring in real estate agents.

You should be able to do some of this yourself - getting rid of junk that no one will want (old tax returns, broken dishes, torn clothing) is a good place to start. When we did our last move, we were fairly ruthless about throwing out that sort of stuff. Next step was donating to local thrift shops - dishes and cutlery, good clothing we no longer wore, ornaments and dishes we didn't need, and books, lots of books. We sold a few things - a couple of rugs, some sports equipment, art. We also rented a small storage unit and put camping equipment, books, rugs, a lot of dishes, clothing and bedding in there. You don't want to empty the house totally but you do want to strip way back, leave plenty of space in closets and cupboards, and remove anything looks worn or broken. And then, clean, clean, clean.

The reason for the post is because I'm not going to do this myself. It's exhausting both physically and mentally. I want to pay someone to do this. My question is: what do I search for? Nothing I have is grand enough to be called an estate, so I'm not sure that estate liquidators would be interested. I haven't seen any listings for junk declutterers. I want someone to clear out my house. They can sell things; they can give them away; they can throw things in the trash bin. I'm not sure i care. I just want it done in the spring. (BTW, I started this myself which is why I don't want to do any more. The people in the local homeless shelter are now the best dressed people in town based on the clothes I brought over.)

Remove anything you want to keep, then call your local St. Vincent DePaul Society Thrift Store and give them first dibs. After they leave call someone like College Hunks Moving Junk to take the rest (be prepared to pay them).

The word 'estate' is not really associated with the word 'grand'. It is generally used to describe what belongs to an individual - as in real estate and personal property. So it is one way to search for companies that will help you clear out your place. It may initially feel macabre to use the word 'estate' when searching for companies that help you organize, clean and clear out a place but that is where you will find the most help. Look under search terms such as "estate cleanout services". You might feel better working with an organizer too so your items can be sorted.

Some of the sorting can't be delegated because it will be particular to your sorting process. But the rest can certainly be assigned to an organizer.

Look for a home organizer. Are you on Facebook? If you are, there are usually community groups specific to where you live where you can ask for local recommendations. Also Nextdoor is a good place to ask. Barring that, I would google “home organizers in my city.”

You could also check to see if there are any "Senior Move Managers" in your area. Even if you aren't a senior, they might be able to point you in the right direction.

We have a couple of companies that call themselves "downsizing service". Try searching for that term.

Just a suggestion: I don't know your circumstances (number of people living in your home, financial means, etc) but you might consider moving out to an apartment that has the same number of bedrooms as your "next home" and take with you only the things that you need and want to keep. Or buy your next home and move only the belongings that you want. Then, contact a real estate agent and ask for their advice on dealing with everything you neither need nor want. Read that Swedish death sort book for motivation. How freeing it will be to get rid of things that weigh you down.

Consider posting on CL for a gig. In larger cities it's a great way to find project-specific help.

You could see if Task Rabbit exists in your area. My 30 year old daughter (in Boston) has been paid to help people do this- she listed one of her skills as cleaning and organizing, she’s a Marie Kondo fan and has fun doing this along side the individuals who hire her for an afternoon. I think it’s likely a together task, but it might be fun if you find the right person to do it with.

Look for a "senior move manager". Your local real estate agents should have referrals. Yes, it's exhausting- making decisions, getting things shipped, arranging charity pickups, arranging repairs, getting cleaners in, then staging for sale. You may need to work side by side with someone for some of it (say, for clothes sorting) but it goes a lot faster when the other person is experienced, cheerful, and sets a reasonable pace. I've known several people who picked out what they wanted, shipped it, and left town after arranging with the real estate agent to get the rest done on a reasonable budget (clear, clean, repair, paint).
