This area is roughly 3 feet wide. We had 3 metal shelves in this area prior to the backsplash installation.

Here are a variety of ways that shelves have been installed. I used the SS metal shelves from IKEA with their brackets that make the shelves appear to float.

So you want the shelves to start where the tile ends?

Not necessarily. I’m short, so I would never be able to reach them if they started where the tile ends.

Seems the shelves cannot start below 18" if you hope to clear most countertop appliances.

Would you be interested in sharing a pic of the whole kitchen? Might help to get a sense for your style! I like the idea posted above of SS floating shelves, not sure if that's too industrial for your taste though. I see you've got quite a bit of space there to get a shelf in on top of the tile - I can tell by the height of your Keurig.

After installing the tile he notified us that he thought the tile was just too thin to withstand the reclaimed wood floating shelves. he stated that we either needed to find lighter shelves or longer shelves that could be anchored into studs.

I don’t understand what this means. What does the tile thickness have to do with the shelving? Also, how much do the shelves weigh? What are you planning to put on them?

He says drilling in the tiles would likely cause them to crack.

When we do floating shelves either we install them before tile or install the supports before the tile back splash
