Can you complete me??

This is our living room. It has been a work in progress for 8 years. We just had this fireplace installed and purchased the new sectional, but now I am stuck! It is open concept. Love neutrals. What next? Lighting? Drapes? Accessories?? artwork??

The lamp behind the sectional is temporary!

I would start with finding some art that you love. It will help guide your choices for accessories, drapes, etc. Just be sure to repeat colors throughout the space to keep it cohesive. With an open concept less is definitely more.

I think I might consider adding these wall mounted bookcases from Crate & Barrel. See below

Some drapery panels & a piece of art that you like.

I'm not fond of the rug/wall color with the sectional color. I would get rid of the black pillows and find ones that have gray & beige

Sorry but the TV belongs to the left of that FP not above it on a nice cabinet and a bit smaller matching cabinet on the other side with a piece of art. As for the rest drapes and not wood blinds with that leather. You will now have to incorporate the color of the carpet mixed with the black for pillows BTW I love the color of the sectional thank goodness it is not brown or black. I love arc lamps behind the corner of a sectional to put light into the center of the room and end tables since right now you have no place to put a drink.I think lime would be an awesome color to add for a punch and then some nice linen drapes in a color as close to wall color as possible. If you wonder about the lime look at how the plants in the pic above work in that space. I like neutral too but it needs some life. As for art I never choose art for my clients you need to find pieces that make you smile. Take a weekend to go to galleries if you have kids take them too, looking at art from a childs point of view is a lot of fun.

BeverlyFLADeziner.. I like those floating shelves. What would you think of an accent chair to the left of the fireplace? I love the look of the lighter drapes and artwork you did earlier too. Eventually hardwood floors but one thing at a time! lol

No problem adding the chair provided the person is not interested in watching TV from that position.

Thank you celerygirl! You have some awesome ideas. I think I just need a personal decorator lol! I get a little spooked by having color

Why are you afraid of colour? All you need to do is pick one colour for this room, and it would give it life. As someone who lives through drab brown and grey winters every year, I want, nay NEED some colour lol. You have the neutral stuff covered, the colour elements don’t even have to be permanent. If you are afraid of investment, thrift stores are loaded with unwanted decor items at low cost. You can try something, then return it. Home dec stores are constantly turning stock over, there is stuff in the clearance areas all of the time.

J Williams, you must live in the same climate as me! Haha. Welcome to the Midwest! Thank you for the advice. Anytime I have done color in a room, it doesn’t last long. I start to feel anxious about the space. I am thinking some pops of dark green for this room.

If you have enough light, maybe a plant might give you some green. Green is one colour I can personally live with, it is relaxing and doesn’t yell in your face to pay attention to it. Blue for some reason makes me anxious even tho it is supposed to be calming.

So many good ideas above. IMHO, you definitely need some color. Art and drapes and the ideas of the shelves would all help. And, I like the idea of an accent chair in a color.

If that tv height works for you, keep it ... but the tv could look better if a bit lower -- almost atop the mantel. Probably wouldn't want it beside the tv unless you were putting it in a corner at an angle or within built ins.

Not a fan of a lot of open portable shelving, especially in a room with a fireplace that will actually be used or children or pets . Dusting is not my thing and I've learned that collecting a lot of little ( otherwise useless) "STUFF" for decorating ends up feeling like adding clutter. So, unless you already know you have items enough to fill all the open shelves that you want do display enough to actually want to dust them regularly -- you probably shouldn't go that route.

What you might consider doing is build in upscale base cabinets (with solid doors and either natural wood or black countertop) . Build them the same depth as your fireplace and paint them the same color as your walls -- then decorate the wall above the countertop. You could add an interesting shelf or group of shelves on the wall above the countertop -- on one or both sides of the fireplace-- IF you already have something you truly want to display. You could make the base cabinets equal width if there is no wall left of the fireplace as a natural stopping point.

By adding built in base cabinets, you'd gain considerable extra storage -- likely more than enough for media related items -- without the cluttered vibe a bought shelving unit. Should you need to set a chair in front of those built - ins, you could. You could even deliberately create a pet home within the built ins on the narrower right side with a single deep drawer beneath an open shelf for pet related items. And half your decorating problem for that fireplace wall would be solved.

Also, try moving your sectional 16"-18" closer to your fireplace AND move the sectional to the right a bit line up the three-seat side of it with the wall behind it (about 6" or so closer to the cute pup in your second of two pics) so the right side of the sofa is closer to being in line with the ?hall? wall. After you do that ...

Consider a room dividing bookcase set behind with it back to the back of the sectional. Add a mix of solid and glass doors (think upscale overhead kitchen cabinets) facing that walk path behind the sofa and you could have more useful storage -- both hidden storage and visible storage. With the top of the bookcase slightly higher than the back of the sectional, you'd have a place behind the sofa for a pair lamps you actually like with their cords hidden between sofa and bookcase.

You can paint the bookcase itself the same color as your walls but create a really upscale look by adding a truly great deep/wide natural wood top -- or a black countertop.

Can't be there to see and feel textures of stone, carpeting, sofa. As to the neutrals, I like them: stone seems like the sectional; wood elements seem like the carpeting. Beverly's incorporates the black too and there you have a comfy neat and trim sort of urban contemporary. I liked her dark curtains rods and curtains etc.... you?

TV absolutely to the side, art on the other side. Pick a color from the art and add one chair to the room as someone suggested. Repeat the color in sofa pillows and an ottoman tray.

This palette of grays, browns, and another color is a starting place--doesn't have to be orange. Could be blue or red--but some trio of your given colors, plus another on. You need pattern and contrast in this space, which a painting, pillows, and a chair could provide.

sharing my family room and fireplace with tv above. we don't suffer from neck pain ? always makes me laugh when I read those comments. my fireplace is very similar to yours. we have really high ceilings though but wanted to show you the shelves that we had put in. yes they get dusty but they get cleaned every few weeks and I love all of my 'things' as they represent our lives over the last 30 years. I agree with picking a color you like and incorporate in little ways throughout the room. mine is orange (bold) but I love it! have fun with whatever you choose. you have a beautiful start!

I know this is the same palette, but loving this chair. This with a pillow for a pop of color to the left of the fireplace. Plant on the right, a Table in the entry with some green and how about a larger tray in the ottoman with colorful accessories?? there have been some great suggestions for artwork too. Just need curtains and then I would be all set!
