Whoa! Didn’t see that drawer placement. Odd. Ours would be to the side.
    Thank you!

The drawer is FAR superior. You can fit more and see what is in there much easier.

Well, then I like the style of the spice drawer storage, and given the choice between a narrow pull-out and wider drawers which can be divided many ways, I think the drawer provides better function. However, there was another recent thread on the same subject, and several members posted about how much they love their pull-outs.

Neither location is optimum. The first, for obvious reasons. And, I would hate to be bending down to find spices in a bottom pullout.

My spices (I have many), are located in two places...in a cupboard next to the range hood, and in a drawer next to the rangetop. Both are easily accessible while cooking, and not affected by heat.

One of the best features of my kitchen.

Would the pullout fit all your bottles and spices? Not only the amount but the sizes? Same thought with a shallow spice drawer. I wouldn't have a shallow drawer for spices as mine wouldn't all fit and not all my jars are the same size. Some are larger and need more head space than others in order for the drawer to open. I guess it comes down as to how many spices you have and if your jars are pretty consistent in size like your photo.

I have two pullouts and wish I had done the drawer for spices. Spices on the lower racks are tough to see as you can ony see one side at a time. OTH I adapted one of the pullouts to accomodate vinegars, oils, etc. on all the remaining shelves and it works great for that.

Personally I don't like either, but if I had to pick it would be the drawer.

I have the drawer. I just wish I had outfitted the 36" drawer instead of the 18" drawer.

I agree with @latifolia - racks on the back of upper cabinet doors will hold a lot of spices, and having them at eye level makes them easy to find. No need to stoop or step out of the way of a drawer to find your spices.

I have a pullout as an upper cabinet. I hate it. Wish I’d thought of a drawer.

We have had a spice drawer under our cooktop for years . There is absolutely no issue with heat. It worked so well it was something my husband insisted on in our new house. The only thing we had to do was have the contractor notch out a corner for the the gas hookup below. Not a big deal at all. This space ordinarily would be a false drawer front and we made it into super useful spice storage. Everything is easy to see and access and because of my husband alphabetical😀I couldn’t recommend it more. Here is a picture of ours

This pic is from the original kitchen. Our new one has dividers which help keep the spices lined up. We do have a pull out in the new kitchen but it’s wider and we use it for oils and vinegars and such.

We have a tiny tiny kitchen, there were no extra drawers, so we have spice “shelves” on a wall, plus bulk storage in the pantry. I would worry about a drawer being too shallow, my stuff is different sizes, but it looks more functional than the pullout.

I prefer the drawer. For most things we have IKEA glass jars with these easy-to-read labels from Amazon which we refill from the spice wall at the grocery store where the spices are in bags. Various salts and peppers and everything in tall bottles are in the top drawer of a two-drawer stack. Anything that I need to dress a salad is in that drawer. I separated the baking spices and extracts in a separate drawer with a ramp near my other baking supplies.

I have mine in a lazy susan because the sizes are so varied.

I also have mine in a wall cabinet lazy susan. easy to group by functionality, but I do sometimes need a footstool for the top shelf.

I have mine in both a drawer and in upper cabinet. The spices in upper cabinet are large containers.

I had the pullout in my last house and I really disliked it. My dd has the same one but it’s wider and it is much better than the one I had.

i now have the drawer and I love it.

I didn't think I would like a spice drawer, but our rental during our build has one and I love it. One can instantly find the spice one is looking for and tell at a glance what needs refilling soon. It is true that big jars don't fit in it, but its worth it to refill the spice jars that do. In the middle of cooking and think you need a dash of spice? The spice drawer is just a pull, glance and shake away. Quite the change from my spice cupboard where I had to root around and the spice I wanted always seemed to be lurking at the back. One can keep an organized spice cupboard, but I found I needed the assist from the spice drawer to keep myself organized.

I just use a cabinet. I keep my extracts, etc in it also. I do have a spinning spice rack above my stove that keeps the routinely used spices. I have to many spices in different size containers to use a drawer or pull out.

Looks like I am not the only one who keeps more than “spices” in the spice area. Extracts, boullion cubes, wasabi, sesame seeds, cornstarch etc.

and it is “root” like a pig not “route“ like a highway just FYI.

We will have a massive pantry. So perhaps I’ll do a spice drawer and a couple lazy Susan’s in the pantry

I LOVE my spice drawer! It's so easy to see what one has and grab it. I also love my Rev-a-Shelf pull-out with cans for tools and a shelf for vinegars and oils. Can't imagine a new kitchen without both!

I have the drawer and it’s much better then old pullout from before

How do you handle different sized spices in a spice drawer??

I’m planning a kitchen renovation right now and Thomasville offers an option for the uppers that is hinged inside of the cabinet and swings out so you can see everything in the rack. Since that doesn’t take up the whole upper there are shallow shelves behind for larger bottles or cooking sprays. I can hardly wait! I can’t do a drawer due to all of the sizes of spice containers (I cook all of the time and use lots of spices).

I have small ones in a basket, regular ones in a rack and giant ones on open shelves or in the upper cabinet right of the range. Lots of mine are homegrown and still in plastic containers waiting to be chopped, pulverized or crushed at the moment they're needed. I'd prefer the giant containers from Sam's Club, but they would require a bigger storage spot. If your cooktop is induction, I can't imagine the heat would be a factor since it is negligible.

Definitely the drawer. It's so much easier to see what you have without bending down or craning your nec

Perspectives are going to vary too not just on what people would prefer but if you're talking new construction or large kitchen or not. Not everyone can pick either. For me there's no way in the world I could have fit a large drawer like that in the remodel of my small 1950s kitchen. So completely moot point if I would have preferred it or not. I could however fit a pullout next to the stove in a space that otherwise would not have had a much better use, and I can't wait to use it!

We use hermetically sealed jars for our spices so the sizes are very different than usual bottles and we keep them in the pantry. We have a spice pullout which we use for oils. Keeping the spices in a drawer could work for us as well. Our pullout is too narrow for the quantity of spices we have regardless

In my tiny kitchen there is just enough room to tuck two 15" base cabinets. I plan to have 6 drawers in one, 5" deep each drawer, to hold my spices.

Base pullout tall, narrow shelves: I don't want to bend that low to see/get spices that are below my hip level.

Base wide (20" plus), pull out drawer: doesn't this block so much of the prep area for you/others when it's pulled out? I think when it's so wide, it affects movement flow for more than 1 person in a kitchen. And if a drawer is under your cooktop, it seems inconvenient to have to step away from a pan/soup pot in order to get the dash of whatever.

All this said, I'm not close to deciding what is best for my two-person household for spice storage: we don't use boutique same-brand jars, they are such a mix of sizes . I like homemade printed lables, but don't seem to be organized enought find a label maker, printing device, etc. I admire the efficient, self-knowing, organized folks on here!

I switched my spice drawer from the right of the range to opposite the range. In my kitchen, it’s much more functional because all I have to do is turn around and make two steps to get to the drawer. I have mostly the same jars because I tend to buy spices that are delivered in sealed envelopes.
