While white would be ok,,, a striated grey with light brown undertones applied horizontally would be fabulous. This is still on trend and I would use brushed brass hardware. It would blend in and achieve a more customized and look for the unit. (Photo is vertical and I suggest horizontal application)

painting it and replacing the hardware would help.

do you plan on keeping the oversized tv there? maybe a carpenter could modify it so that it fits better.

I notice that your baseboards in this room are also wood toned. Is all your trim like this? Before giving advice on a single space like this (and yes, the TV being too big for the unit is going to be a problem), it is important to know what is going on in the rest of the space and rest of the house for that matter. The built-in may not be the only issue for this room.

I like @Beth H. :'s ideas using full color on the whole wall, including all trim. However, I agree with @Elizabeth Minish Design that the baseboard becomes part of the consideration and transitions are important, so where does the wood baseboard look end? Are the doors to the room this oak color of wood? Can you get away with painting the entire room including the built-ins a color color? Maybe just one side of the door (s) into the room, but definitely include the baseboard to match the wall color. And, change the hardware to something interesting using the finish of the door hardware as color cue.

Thanks, everyone! Yes, the wood trim is in the whole room and the whole house... I’d like to paint it all white eventually. Knowing that’s such a big project though, I’m wondering if I’m better off trying to just embrace the wood trim?

good call on the size of the tv as well... we just bought the house so that’s a photo of the previous owners tv. I’ll need to measure how ours will fit into it.

If you just bought the house, I would urge you to consider waiting until you have lived in it for awhile. Ideally, through all the seasons to see how the light changes, other things that may bother you about the space or things that actually grow on you over time.

You have only shown us photos of the space with someone else's furniture in it, apparently.

What is your own personal style? Is it consistent with a look that has white trim everywhere? This is not a traditional space. All the suggestions for painted cabinetry show traditional cabinet styles and traditional furniture. Are you sure you want to be paddling upstream against that much current? If you were up for the task, would you be able to stand the mismatched look for as long as it would take you to afford repainting all the trim if you can't make it happen all in one go? Would that approach even work with the rest of the architectural intent of this house? Is there another way to get closer to what you like?

A lot of questions to consider before embarking on what can be an expensive an time-consuming adventure.

This is a very good example of how a design professional can add a huge amount of value to your project. Consider hiring one.

Dear @Vic A, Now that you show us the entire space and the transitions, I feel this question is part of a much bigger visual plan. As you can tell with the comments back from pro's on this platform, the partitioning of this one cabinet and asking what to paint it or leave it alone is a decision that can't be made without considering the rest of the space. There are transitions to consider--wall base, sizes of openings (dictating where you can aesthetically stop and start paint) and now that I see the kitchen and hallway with stair are all visible from this space, it is even more important to consider this holistically. I think the best thing I can recommend is that you interview and retain the services of a good interior designer for this decision. You will be glad you did!

WAIT 1 year before you do anything. The place looks very livable as is. See how it functions and if there are any bigger function fish to fry before you tweak the form. There are always surprises in a new home.

Move the TV to the back wall.

Reconfigure the sectional so it is facing the new TV placement. Get a dark small TV stand to set the TV on.
