No. Do not paint them. Your cabinets are not really out of style. It is not like you have arched top cherry that have aged to that deep red. Designers have been crying that white and gray are on the way out for ten years now. Eventually they will be right and if you are going to base painting or not on what's in, you will be painting again sooner rather than later.

ETA: I paint cabinets in 90% of the homes I sell, so I am a big fan of painting a dated kitchen, but the cabinets are the best part of that picture.

Much better to change out the cabinet pulls and the dated backsplash. The cabinets themselves are a classic look and color. You might also consider new flooring if the budget allows - what's there appears very pink-ish in color and will be much more difficult to decorate around.

Do you want to paint them? You will find that many on this forum would NEVER paint wood cabinets. I'm not one of them. I say, if you want to paint them, then I would. Just be aware that it's not an inexpensive job. You need a painter who has done this many times before and knows what products to use The backsplash should be updated as well. It's hard to tell what your counters are. How about the floor. Sometimes one thing starts a chain reaction. Be sure you know how far you want to go before starting.

Many new kitchens now are using warm toned wood.

I do not recommend painting unless the cabinets are worn and you want to get some more life out of them as you save for new. Painted over previously finished cabinets will need touch ups over time - the finish is not as durable as factory painted. The only other reason I would recommend paint is if your hearts desire is painted and your willing to do the upkeep to keep them looking pretty. Do not paint because of trends - they change very frequently in the design world to promote marketing of new products.

I wouldn’t paint them. I love the idea of black pulls and agree that the floor and backsplash are where I’d put my money. I can’t tell what the counter is made out of. Is it in good shape?

You're cabinets look very current so if it's just a change you want, try new hardware. Painting cabinetry is a short term fix but because the finish isn't hardened on like it would be when they were made they will chip on the edges and corners over time. If you're planning on moving in the near future this might be fine, but your cabinets look to have a lot of life left in them so if you're staying try new hardware.

Only paint if you really hate these cabinets... Frankly they look great. It seems like the space needs updating and that can give you a dramatic change.

I have many customers now who are looking at wood again or a warmer white - not the cool white/gray color pallet that was popular for so long.

Do what is right for you and the bones of the house - not what everyone else is doing.

Take some pictures further back of the room and you can get loads of advise!

You guys are motivating me to keep what I have. I just bought some hardware to see what it will do for a change. So how can I change the floor if I don't rip out the cabinets? We will have to do tile. Do we overlay floor on top of tile? I would like to do backsplash the same as countertop. Would a veiny gray (white) quartz look good with this color cabinet?

More photos of the kitchen would be helpful. Do you know if the tile is under the cabinets? As often the flooring just runs up to the cabinet.

Another vote to NOT paint cabinets, they look very nice. New backsplash and pulls and Floor if desired. I don't think you can put tile on top of tile! I put Marmoleum click over pergo and believe you can put it over tile. But other material may require removal of existing tile.
Get samples of counter to see how they look with cabinets.

The flooring is the dated part of the kitchen. The cabinets look good, and in my book, wood is always “in” if the color isn’t too dominant, and yours is nice and neutral. I’d do the flooring first.

the entire thing, cabs, flooring/counter and for sure the backsplash, are very 90's.

Heck, it's over 25 years old! They're maple cabs, nothing special. You could easily paint them white and have a brand new kitchen (with the other things changed as well!) And you can't compare these to the light stained oak cabinets that someone posted a picture of. they're apples/oranges.

While the cabs may be in good shape, you could get away w/leaving them as is and changing everything else. But, what look do you want?

The finish is very yellow. putting on a gray quartz may look sickly next to the cabinet finish. It all depends on the color gray. Ditto the floor. It looks like a pinkish, warm terra cotta. Are those staying or going?

So, what look are you hoping to get? changing out the hardware isn't going to do much.

you could think about redoing the crown to something like this, and perhaps doing a few doors w/glass. quartz countertops, a new splash, lighting

The cabinets and counters are great! Just the backsplash and floor need something different. You need something that will work with the rest of the house, but still look fresh and new. I’d suggest an on site visit from a designer to look at your whole and give you some direction. That may be all you need. Or you may want a little more help whittling down all the many available products.

We replaced tile floors with hardwood without changing cabinets. It was a mess (because taking out tile just is) but they did their best to keep dust contained to kitchen by taping it off with thick plastic sheeting. It’s a hassle but in our experience SO worth it.

The warmth of the wood cabinets is nice but there is too much of it. I would suggest painting only the upper cabinets. That way you could also keep the tile floor if changing that is not in your budget right now.

Change the flooring , handles and splash back , and then decide whether to paint or leave . Do you have old lighting or window treatments to update .

Another vote for not painting but updating the backslash and flooring instead.

Normally I'm all for painting cabinets but I think these are just fine.

While you are considering options, have you thought about open shelving? I was recently flooded in the last huge Sydney storms.. Damage to cupboards, required removing a cupboard to the window left. So I took the plunge and removed all the doors in the kitchen. I love being able to reach for dishes and ingredients when cooking. More repair is required yet but I'm really happy so far. I think your floor tiles would look great with this look!

I agree with most of the commentators that a change in flooring (maybe large modern porcelain tiles)/backsplash and hardware (don’t do the exact same size and shape for each piece of hardware - mix it up a bit within the same family) are the more pressing issues - then the countertops if budget allows. Rather than paint the cabinets, I think adding some glass to a few of the cabinets would add some interest and break up the monotony.

I would not paint them. They are fine the way they are. If you do decide to paint remove the uppers, take them to the garage to prep etc. If you have a corner cab be extra careful - sometimes there are screws between the cabinets under the corner cabinet face frame. If not done correctly you can ruin the corner cab when taking it down. Best of luck!
