Is the pipe PVC or clay tile? (looks like PVC).

My question would be: How do roots get into a PVC drain pipe? Is the pipe broken? It looks to me like there was a tee in the pipe (perhaps an outdoor clean out?) where a bundle of roots seem to come from above.

Clay tile drains would get roots at the joints, but in general, a PVC drain pipe shouldn't have roots in it (unless it's come apart). It's the "coming apart" that would worry me.

I have seen roots make their way through a PVC fitting. Even if glued up, it is amazing how they can grow through the smallest crack. Sometimes, once they get through, they then grow large enough to crack the union.

What is the solution?

Good to know. I haven't seen that.

Usually roots grow seeking water. If a joint isn't leaking, I can't imagine roots being very interested.
