Ivana, I think your instincts to use draperies here are good, because the horizontal lines of the shutters and the mantel are making the eye go side to side, instead of being able to rest in the center. But Carolyn Albert Kincl is correct, you have to solve the challenge of how to open the shutters. The solution is to use a swing arm rod for a drapery panel to the side of the windows. A swing arm rod is hinged, and moves to the side when you need it out of the way. Look up the WCAA members in your area - a window coverings professional will be able to source these rods for you. www.wcaa.org HelserBrothers have the nicest swing arm rod out there, the Evita - and it has a tieback part attached, which moves with the large swing arm ( the tieback armature is the way you move it) but it may be larger than you need. You can tie the panel up higher to let in more light, or use a textured sheer.
