concur: squash are very promiscuous and require physical separation of of around one mile. The good news is that different species do not cross.

Unless you grow squash on a massive scale, hand pollinating just a few squash of each kind should give you more than enough seed and you can let the bees do the rest of the work.

Ain't that the truth. Hand pollination, ideally in plastic bags, one around each flower, is the way to go. Unless you can train your bees to do the right thing.

Just tie, with a wire tie wrap, a plastic bag around each flower that you hand pollinate. Keeps it from being otherwise pollinated. Of course, get to them before the bees do. Might even put the bag around the flower just before it opens up. Best to do it in partial shade, because it can get hot inside the bag. This is just a flower-by-flower insect barrier. As noted, you really only need ONE fruit, and ONE female flower, to get loads of seeds.

Once pollinated, and the flower falls off, remove the bag. When the fruit gets big enough, mark it as the one you hand pollinated, so you don't lose track of it.
