Relax, office paper is fine. Plain brown cardboard better but fine. Not because of toxicity so much as office paper mats and does not let much air in.

i would hope you can tell a dead worm from a live one ... so... are they dead??? ...

If you add outdoor garden debris, you stand an excellent chance of turning your worm bin into a slug bin.

@ken it's only been a few days. I'm hoping the shredded paper will be acceptable to them. When I opened the bin earlier today, I saw no sign of activity at the top. I'm hoping this means they've migrated down into their bedding material like they're supposed to.

cant you turn some over and find the wigglers???

There is a worm forum but it's extremely inactive. It's gotten only 3 posts this month. I'm better off going to a different gardening forum and praying someone has some experience with worms (which thankfully a few people on this forum do).

You did not kill your worms:-) Shredded office paper is perfectly acceptable for bedding......as is shredded junk mail. It just tends to mat up more than newspaper or shredded cardboard and stays too soggy. Adding dried leaves if you have any could lighten the mass and perk things up.
