Gurney - terrible service, order problems

I placed an order in January. I did not receive anything - some items were not seasonal. I tried to call them many times, hours on hold (over several calls). no answer. I emailed them at multiple addresses. I faxed them. Finally I get a response with part of my order - saying it could not be shipped because it had not been paid for! it included an invoice for 1/3 of my order for MORE then the total of the original order for 3x as much!

I emailed and faxed them a full copy of my order so it was easy to get it correct. You would think after all they put me through they would at least charge me correctly.

I am not trying like heck to call, email and fax to get this resolved. Meanwhile my potato order should have been in the ground already. It is STILL not p;laced because they say they need payment but they made it impossible to pay! I waited on hold for over 20 minutes and finally gave up.

I understand covid BUT I placed this order 1/3/20.

Currently after wasting hours on this I am literally not 1 second closer to getting my order. In fact I am no better off then when I started.

No apology, no explanation, no call, no message, nothing. Simple an invoice for way to much with no way to pay even if I wanted to.

If you checked them out on Garden Watchdog, a mail order nursery clearinghouse, you would find they have a horrible reputation with customer service, as do all other members of the Direct Gardening Association.

    A company to avoid!!

You have probably just lost this money. I would file a report with the BBB and send a copy to Gurney. Good luck, but they sound like a scam company. I would go ahead and try to find what the things elsewhere.

Thanks! I wish I had, they are a larger company.

Really?? I just also placed and order. Gurneys had good reviews from what I found. But maybe there are some other sources of info. out there I didn't see . . . I expect a couple weeks late, but not months!! If they are indeed a legit business. I see the mixed reviews. I thought maybe seeds would be a no brainer . . . but I also ordered two blueberry bushes. I thought coming from IN would not be that big of a deal to me here in MI. The smaller blueberries are hard to find in the stores and nurseries around me.

They used to be good years ago. I never ordered much, because they had more varieties for the north. However, the older companies have been bought and sold so much, you can't trust the name anymore.

Example, not seeds, but furniture. Big Lots is selling Broyhill and it is getting terrible reviews. come to find out, they went bankrupt in 2018(?). Someone has bought the name and is making cheap furniture with that brand name.

I stopped ordering from Guerneys back in the 70s. And, yes, tigereye, I think all the old companies have been sold to others, so who knows who owns them now since most have changed hands multiple times.

I have never ordered from Gurneys...or any other Direct Gardening Association affiliate. The reviews for Gurneys have been uniformly bad as long as I have been gardening....which is a very long time indeed!!

I'd be interested in seeing the source for Gurney's business information. I looked for just such a thing before ordering from them. The only source I found was the usual "Dave's Garden" ratings, which was mixed.

Contact your credit card company and tell them what happened. Most of them will credit you for the entire purchase.

I suggest you'll be better served by using local companies for your seed and nursery needs. You've got NESeeds in the Northeast, Wyatt-Quarles Seeds in the Carolinas, etc. Since moving to North Carolina I've gotten excellent blueberry bushes (in 1 1/2gal pots, 3' high, less then $15 each) from a nursery 8 miles from the house that propagates and grows their own stock to supply to other retailers.

I have done ok with Gurneys

Too funny! I haven't had a catalog from Gurney's in years. I got one in the mail yesterday.

If I could find a local source for the blueberry bushes I want I surely would. The lowbush types are a rare find. I am constantly looking but have never found one even within a 50 mile radius. Highbush types yes, many. Gurney's home office is actually near me, next state over in IN, which is why I thought they might be a good place to order. I'm not ordering things I could get locally from them. However, their plant material does not necessarily come from IN, that I was aware of.

So I gave them one more chance and placed an order. It got delayed at least 3 times and shipped WAY outside the correct planting times. I was never notified about delays. Several items were out of stock and not set. I paid for the entire order and despite several items not being available I am getting billed for more money!

I made multiple attempts to discuss my first issue particularly how I got billed more when i was missing items and never EVER got a response. Just sorry were are busy because of covid shipments are delayed. That has nothing to do with charging me more for less.

    Terrible.

My order arrived dead and rotted, useless. I gave them slack due to the virus, but this was not a delay, it was poor inventory management. I can nurse a struggling plant back to health, but these items were useless and I cancelled the rest of the order. Sad to see an old formerly American company go down the toilet.

Three or four years back I had similar issues and decided I would never order from them again. I placed the order in January. They billed me immediately. It was for a whopping 4 plants. I kept getting email after email with the shipping dates being pushed back further and further. At one point they had shipped two plants but before I received them I got another email saying the other two would be shipped the following year. When I placed my order the website didn't say anything was backordered or out of stock, and when I checked after I got that email the website still didn't say anything like that. So I emailed customer service and told them if I didn't get my plants they will refund my entire order. I got an email back saying "sorry for the confusion" (the only "confusion" was on their end) and they sent the other two plants out that week. When I finally got my plants not only was it past the prime planting time for bare root plants in my area and already getting hot but three of the plants were DOA. I didn't even bother trying to get replacements and chalked it up as a loss. I wasn't dealing with them further.

Yes, back in the day when my father was gardening Gurney was a class outfit but that ended years ago. I've wanted to try their exclusive 'gotta have it' sweet corn but I'll stick with Ambrosia as I don't want to deal with them.

Reimer seeds is another vendor that will never see another dime of my money for similar seasons.
