Get new drapes and a wooden rod that you like. Hang them from two inches below the ceiling so they just touch the floor. This will give the illusion of more height. Get a nice sisal or other area rugs...In the living room, it looks like it could take a 8x9 size... in the fireplace room, probably a 6x9 size. 3m Solar film on the windows will get rid of the bleached outdoors and you'll see it all in true color, and it will protect your floors and fabrics.

Since you walk right into the living room area, I'd have the larger sofa against the long wall. I see you have idea pages on the wall. Under the window to the left, i'd place either a trunk or a taller bureau with a lamp on the left side. I would not put any curtains here, but if you want privacy you could install some good quality shades to pull down in the evening.

In the fireplace room, It would be fun to have a larger dining table there. Or, you can turn that into a kind of library area, with a love seat and a large ottoman, maybe another chair you could corner near the fireplace. put some large artwork (maybe two canvases from Ballard Designs) , the longer drapes and the 6x9 rug and your done. You need at least a larger mirror or artwork over the fireplace. what is there right now is too small. If you are keeping the table, i'd rather see it with it's leaves in so it doesn't look so dinky in the space.

Overall, I think you want to keep a lighter paint color to help brighten the space. If you want to keep most of the furniture neutral, that allows you to change the look with pillows and throws and such, though if you can fit another chair in the fireplace area, this would be the place to use a patterned fabric.

In the basement: If you need an office area, put it in the open area - you could even delineate that area with a slightly different paint color. You can get a upholsterer to put new stuffing in the sofa pillows (and cushions if needed), and find some new pillows at Pier 1 or Home goods that have brown and cream, and maybe a touch of green. You'll want to take one of the sofa back cushions with you to get the colors right. 12x12 pillow squares should be a good size.

If you need help with paint colors and such, you can contact a local interior designer for this kind of consultation, which will usually just have one fee attached to it $150 - 300 is worth spending to get it the way you want with some help. Congrats on your new home :)
