Pair beige siding with brown or black?

Looking to replace doors, windows, and roof. I'm just really unsure of which direction to head. I like the contrast of the black, but worry it'll be too much. Don't pay any attention to the black stairs on the brown version -- they'd be dark brown. Thoughts?

I like the brown. The black is pretty severe, especially a black garage door right in front since it pulls A LOT of focus. Though there's not that much stone, I like the brown with it. It's also a nice fit with your siding color.

Just wanted to add I do like beige with black quite a bit. In this case, it looks like a bit too much to my eye. Love the garage door choice. :-)

I like the brown version, too. Glad to see you are getting rid of the oval window.

Oh my goodness...isn't that oval window just HORRIBLE?!

@chloebud @houssaon Do you think house colored windows on the brown version? Or bronze? My fear of the brown is that the roof will look like it currently does. 😂

The black feels a little more modern, although severe, but it will weather & dull over time. The brown is monochromatic, but feels a little aged in my opinion..

@Katie B. I think almost anything is better than its current state. I *do like both. Several of my neighbors voted on black while only one went with brown. In fact, my Facebook post was overwhelmingly a vote for black. I think it depends on what I'm looking for -- traditional vs. a more modern touch. I don't know the answer to that because it probably depends on my mood.

i guess i'm diff,, I love the black. the brown is blah. want to be like everyone else? do brown.

remember too, once the roof is on, it will appear a lot lighter than what you think. i did a dark charcoal cement tile roof and once it was up, it looks light gray! completely diff looking. So unless you do a deep, very black, it's going to appear like a gray once it's up.

I love this house. it's brick, but it's a soft beige brick w/black/wood accenting.

this one is dramatic but also has a gray roof. you could go that route

I vote for the black. bring in some wood accents (arbor, shake shingles, porch posts, whatever, ) in order to 'warm' up the dark contrasts. In fact, look into doing wood on your dormer. either a wood siding or a wood shake. or do the gables in the wood

@Casa Marcelo I agree. Do you think that it will look worse when it dulls or better to not be as stark? Do you think there's a way to go with black, but be less stark? Maybe house colored porch posts?

@Tracey Hollingsworth I think it will look better as it dulls, for sure! You can do a charcoal black, so 1-2 values below a stark black color! That would be your best bet so as to dissuade fear from the starkness.

Yes, and I pretty much always agree with beth.

I’m a big fan of black.

Now, my parents (in their 60s, very traditional) would NEVER paint brick, mix metals, and they would never, ever paint anything black. But they sure love all of their wood and excessive use of trim/molding throughout their house. So, yes it’s a modern versus traditional thing, I think.

Consider white with black windows and a metal roof in shiny galvaume. Paint the garage door white to blend in and then bring the front door out with a pop of your favorite bright color. Add great landscaping all round the porch, walk and drive. Increase the size of your lantern lights, move the house numbers above the garage door and enlarge them. Do you have room for a porch chair swing matched to the front door color? This one comes in 9 colors.

@Katie B. "Excessive use of trim." -- you're funny! I was just talking this through and was thinking about resale -- so say 10 years from now, we'll be selling to a young couple with kids (it's that kind of neighborhood). I think they'd be more likely to go with the black. Not that I should design to someone else's taste, but I do weigh some of those factors. It's a nerve wracking decision considering the money at play.

This is true! Opinions can be all over the place. It's YOU that matters.

@chloebud 😂 The problem is that I like both! ...at least in those pictures. The original thought was brown, but then I decided to play around with black.

the problem with brown is that you'll always have to stay in the warm brown color group( fall colors, beige, red, tans, etc) For instance, if you wanted to do any type of gray, the brown roof isn't going to look good. ditto w/some of the blue tones. At least w/charcoal, gray or black, you can do just about any color.

Black for sure. It looks fresher and more modern. The brown holds no appeal to me and looks like a very average Joe.

    @Beth H. : Good point -- and I don't like the current (20 year old) red/brown.

    I like the brown.

Tracey, our daughter and SIL's house has beige/khaki-ish siding with black door and shutters...white trim and charcoal roof. Looks great! Their garage is painted same as the siding, but it's also detached and set back. As I mentioned, I love beige and black, so the color combo in your first pic appeals to me. It's just that black garage in front is kind of jarring. I like Beth's suggestion of a charcoal roof. Not a big fan of black roofs, and, yes, everything does work with charcoal.

then I think a darker charcoal (remember, it will look a few shades lighter once up) is a no brainer.

here are my DARK charcoal tiles! lol. they look gray! Holding them in my hand, they looked almost black

@Beth H. : That's crazy! Do you think dark windows (black/bronze) or house colored?

@Tracey Hollingsworth black windows! Don’t even mess with me right now. Always black windows.

I much prefer the black, but is your roof color staying the way it is? because that changes the effect quite a bit!

    @acm Noooo!

@Katie B. So is that a no to bronze? 😂

    Bronze is ok too

I just went through this, light brown house. We added black windows, I painted the front door black, but chose dark metallic bronze garage doors...because I felt that black ones were too harsh (single and double doors)...it felt like a black cave in front of the house. I have seen black garage doors that absolutely work, but for mine...they felt dominating. So I chose blackish roof in stead, and will do some solid black metal accent roof right above the garage doors.
