then they should look beautiful. have him do some samples of diff finishes. If they will look like any of these pictures, you don't want a glossy finish. You want something matte looking but easy to clean. and something that seals the wood.

I don't know if Bona finishing (normally for floors) is avail for cabinets. you'd have to do your research on that. maybe there is an oil coating for cabinets like they have for floors. You'd have to provide the maker w/the products and he would have to learn how to do it. (Can they watch videos??) But it could be an option.

Or, he can just use a top coat wood cabinet finish like General finishes Flat.

I don't know if they use a sprayer,,,but lacquer is another option

He does use a sprayer. He said his finishes are more matte so that's good. He did a couple samples for me with stain and I just clear coated (matte) the back and I liked it more than the stains!

I just wondered if there was anything out there that made the grain pop because I love the quartersawn oak flecks so was hoping to see them more with still a natural look/tone. I've heard them called reactive stains (just makes the grains pop)... And I've heard of Rubio which had some I liked. I think Rubio might be quite a process though. 😬

so you like the diff in coloring w/the grain. some portions of the grain will absorb more stain coloring which would give you that 'darker' pop you're talking about. If you want natural, then you're not really going to get much contrast.

perhaps he can do a very light stain, a custom color stain, that would give you the natural, but also the darker contrast in the quarter sawn grain portions.

Yes, I'm thinking I'll either go straight natural or have him lighten one of them he showed me. I like the cabinets as a whole lighter but I like the quartersawn grain too. Some of the natural ones I see online are drastically light and some are perfect. I was hoping someone has a combination or example of mixes they used. A lot of the custom mixes online- they don't tell you exactly what it is. Thank you Beth!

@wwestcott We are struggling with the right stain for our island. That pic looks great but every sample we've seen with a natual stain ends up making the wood look too orange for our taste. Do you have pics of your finished kitchen you can share

We love our kitchen! It was natural stain on quarter sawn oak. Maybe would have loved it a tad lighter but a custom stain would have been $$$ and it was already pretty expensive. Happy with how it turned out!

wwestcott can you share which natural stain you used and did you have to sand the quarter sewn wood before applying the stain? We have quarter sewn ordered for our new kitchen cabinets.
