I'm sorry, but I don't like the look of the pergola. I think the canopy is much better.

This design is a combination of a pergola and a portico. I like how they used a rain change on the left. Must be pitched slightly forward and to the left.

Well...the house design is an interesting and creative one. The pergola is interesting and inviting too. In my opinion, however, the two do not fit well with one another. Perhaps a pergola which borrows some of the forms of the house will fit better. The pyramid portico above might be a good starting point.

The canopy is more functional and the streamlined look better coordinates with the house overall. If you want a pergola, do it at the back of the house.

A canopy/porch with the solid roof is a better idea but if you want to change the look a bit, you could mirror the slope of the roofline on the left side of the house and create a three hip roof; in fact, unless you live in the desert and water running off the roof is not an issue, that is what I'd do and add black gutter over the black fascia on all three sides, having black downspouts go down in the corner by the posts closest to the house and creating an underwater drain pipe to move the rainwater away from the house.

When I was in high school there was a flat roof canopy between two buildings about eight feet wide and the sidewalk beneath it got wet from the splatter as the rain ran off the roof the full length of the canopy on both sides -- as did the shoes and legs of anyone walking under it in the rain.

While the flat ridge on this canopy is likely in the center with a fourth roof slope on the back matching the front slope, the look of the roof would be somewhat similar with that flat ridge against the side of your house.

Alternately, you could put gutter on two sides to catch the splash.

Whatever roof line you choose, you can get more of the look of a pergola if you put clear or tinted "greenhouse" roofing atop it and still have shelter from the elements.

OR (my personal favorite): This look (in black) would be really dramatic in front of your house: You could put a canopy all the way across the front of your house with a half hexagon shape or, better yet, a shape that is five sides of an octagon AND use the clear "greenhouse" roofing atop it.

HI -- Incredible house , almost Frank L Wright style . Do you know who the Architect is ? I think that design person would be who would like to design what you need to go with the house . Polite to do I think .

Thanks, yes, I called the architect a few weeks ago and have not heard back.

We have a canopy as you show and love it. That said, we live in the PNW, so shielding the front entry from rain is essential.

Why are you considering changing it?

IMO at least a few feet off the front door should be covered.

@BeverlyFLADeziner. Thanks for the inspiration photo. I missed that one as I gathered others into an idea book. The first 4 feet or so of the entry way will be covered by the main roof of the house. The canopy then ties into the roof and extends out over the walkway.
