Can you split the chairs up? They look like twins the first day of kindergarten --scared to be separated.

I would paint your walls a light warm grey. Like BM Revere Pewter. I would leave the ceiling white, the lovely cove calls attention to itself without needing anything extra.

I like howellmsue's paint suggestions. Curtains can be difficult to fit in. I would do plain for awhile.

Like the chairs on either side of firepl. Area rug not working to busy. Go a silver gray shag . Place items on coffee table tall glam. Paint walls a dove gray from chairs. Drapes solid, and 2 shades darker than walls. A woven light weight fabric. Put on brush nickel rod. All accessories should be in silver and a accent color, which in your case gray, silver n black. I don't see use for chair in back of furn. Furn should serve a purpose .

Ceiling white.

Paint all trim incl. windows in white. After looking at ceiling. Paint insert part white then around insert a shade darker than walls. Add a half panel on end of window only, same fabric as other window, so it looks finished.

Light needs to go. It is not correct shape for a living room. It is too high. Light and mirror are competing with each other. Rug is wrong hue for the furniture. It also does not give the glamorous vibe that your furniture style and color give off. Hate to be critical but you will always feel something is off. Curtain panels to match your wall color in silk dupioni. It has a shine that will add to the glam look you have started.

For sure Chang out chandiers. Living rm not working there. Love sunburst good job. Nothing on mantel. Area rug is fighting with chairs. a solid is way to go..

I'd have to run horizontal molding from the top and the bottom of both quarter round windows, paint windows and trim a color you have in the room, and fill in the new framed space with bold colorful art. The windows look too small, incomplete, and unfinished...

I really like the last furniture arrangement as well. Prior to you posting the latest pic, I liked the chairs by the fireplace the best and thought you could put a bench at the opening so it doesn't feel so vacant. The bench could be a storage bench for the tea party essentials! And, it could have the complimentary colors of the green and coral that are in the rug. I also think you could (if space allows) push the furniture a little further out (a few inches) so the rug can be better seen. I have small girls as well and you've inspired me to be a little bolder with my decorating - no sense waiting till they 'grow up'! They must feel like princesses in this room! Nicely done.

Hi kgradovan - thanks for you comments! I think you mean something like this for the arrangement. I will maybe move everything around and try with a bench I have in another room. It does look strange and open from the entry way with nothing there, but I think abbyjean really identified the orginal problem which is too much symmetry. There is two of everything - two windows, two sofas, two chairs, etc. The current arrangement seems to take that away a little. I just ordered new pillows for the sofas and chairs and got a new throw for sofa!

I think I have to go with Travis on the mantle and leave the sunburst there ALONE. Would you ever want that piece with the reeds on the floor in the corner under your wedding pic? What do the candles or one candle look like on the garden stool between the chairs? Or does that need to stay empty?

Take every thing off mantel. Sunburst and scones are enough. Don't over do.

Not crazy for green with your furn color. Gray would be better choice. Why do you need more stuff?

@abbyjean - Ha! I already moved the vase to the other corner! We'll see about it staying there. Little hands may be too curious. I think travisinteriors may be right about the mantle. I think I need to see is after painting and curtains up. Still really stuck on a color. Gray samples really haven't looked right. Maybe I should look at a more beige gray? My rug has a kind of champagne/beige/gray color in it that is the same color in my chairs. Also, I have an old cabinet that is waiting for color choices to get re-finished. Plans are to place it in the corner by large window to use as a bar cabinet when we entertain. I can pretty much go nuts on this. Any fun suggestions?

Oh, I hate to think of you wasting a day of shopping and then even ordering......can things be returned? You might be so right in that the beige gray is best, especially if THAT COLOR is in more than one thing in the room.
HOW PERFECT to have a bar area set up in a great piece of furniture. I think I will stay safe with this one and suggest GRAY! That is not going nuts, though, is it? Maybe the outside could be safe for when it is not open and the bar is not being used. BUT when the doors/windows open, the back of the shelves could have that pop of color. Even your purple could be on the back of this piece on the inside. Get green wine glasses!!!!

Paint new bar a silver. Inside put in mirror squares, makes a statement when open does it have a light? If not you can add one inside they are battery and sold at Lowe's. Brush nickel hardware. Go a soft dove gray just hint of color, on walls, are you putting samples on wall? only way to tell. paint window trim white. the oak is taking away from room. Panels window a shade or two darker than walls. Simple brush nickel rods. Silver should be yr accent color. No small items on floor. If you can't go big. Use nothing.

The girls would like the bling with the mirror inside! And gray was close to the silver Travis suggested.

The trim is all getting painted the same "white" as the fireplace. Baseboards are currently in basement getting final coat. I'll be starting on the windows next week. @travisinteriors: when you say silver on the cabinet, do you mean a metallic silver, or just silver color? It will definitely be getting a light inside and glass shelves. Hardware will be changed for sure as well. Was thinking about doing a metallic wallpaper in the back as my china in the dining room has a mirrored back. Our expensive wedding gift stemware is all clear glass.

I've yet to find a sample of paint that I like well enough to try on the wall. Usually I find 2-3 colors I like and paint onto poster board. All the grays I've looked at look very blue.

Symmetry isn't always a bad thing, only sometimes.

Curtains are unnecessary on the curved windows unless you have a problem with sunlight or nosey neighbors.

Do paint the trim around the windows white. That will make a huge difference.

Wallpaper in a metallic black and silver print try the design in your chairs. Yes a metallic silver. Very nice. Have you tried owl gray, I think Ben Moore. Sherwin Williams have some nice ones. You need to put paint right on wall in 2 or 3 areas of the room, for true color. Putting it on a board isn't going to give you that.

Also you can put a silver glaze on walls. Lowes has one, you need to talk to them about how to apply to walls. I've done it in homes. But a painter does it for me so not sure. Just know it comes out with a shine to it.

I haven't read all the comments yet, but I wanted to comment on the ceiling. I love matching the colour of ceilings to walls. It is somehow cosier. I just painted my white ceilings in living & dining rooms quite a dark blue grey - the same colour as the walls. Love it! Of course my ceilings are quite high, but you would be amazed at the difference it makes. Makes everything else pop.

What about picking up the purple in your chairs for the curtains?

Sorry. I know I'm not an interior designer, but I'm not a fan of the grey on grey on silver that travisinteriors has suggested. Too boring. I would paint the cabinet a deep purple (almost as dark as the current brown) with green like your new throw inside (I hope you keep it. It looks great). I agree that hardware could be brushed nickel, arched window trim should be painted white, and curtain hardware should be same hardware colour as the cabinet hardware. BTW: I love that cabinet.

I think the fireplace should be larger to match the size of the windows on either side. Build it out and make a larger place to sit and a larger mantle. I think it would really help balance the space.

I was also going to suggest the lime green for the interior of your cabinet, whatever color you paint the outside. I have the same kind of faux cove ceiling, and I painted the "cove" layer a darker, contrasting color to the walls, and the ceiling part a creamy white--looks nice, but I don't have crown molding, either.

I actually think the current color would work and would look fine once the trim is painted around the windows. But if I were to actually use the room I'd need light closer to me. What about getting rid of the big chandelier (either one) and using a hanging light or a floor lamp? The wood floor is so pretty, I know it'll probably bug you to have a cord running across it - so some hanging lamps (not centered) would be nice. The chandelier is a problem - it distracts from the mirror and the sconces over the mantle. Even if you switch them, I think it will still be awkward.

For me the round mirrored table is too much - I'd cover it at least partially with a small tablecloth, maybe a square one so the sides still show and connect the bling of the mantle mirror and chandelier.

Do you have access to Ikea? They has some cool paper lanterns that might work in this space since it's really very modern and spare. The Torna line has a pendant, floor and table to choose from.

By utilizing short curtain rods just above bottom window the rods that swing if need be ,utilize a thin striped fabric that picks up accent color in chairs and keep top window exposed. A fine cotton or a crisp chintz like striped fabric will elongate the window and light from top window will allow sun to flow.That's only if the length of the top of the bottom window allows for enough curtain length. Have the fireplace wall painted a light to medium gray and use a faint gray on other 3 walls. Or utilize an almond wisp color from Sherwin Williams. You could accent the other fireplace wall with a plum .Try wainscoting the walls with bead board just paint the deeper choice of color above . Add another accent color through prints in pillows or curtain fabrics. Benjamin Moore has some beautiful plum colored paint ,although I prefer neutrals you may want to look at a color called carrington beige , also an airy, silver lighting fixture may not be so overwhelming for the room ,try a couple of can lighting fixtures to accent your mantel and a couple to bring light to the other opposite wall. LOVE the idea of green on the inside of cabinet! A dark purple on the outside could look really great too. I'll look for some samples this week. Thanks for the ideas! I'm hoping to find some wall color ideas too. At my MILs this weekend so I'll get picks of the sectional we will inherit. Was thinking it would replace purple sofas eventually. Love the wallpaper. Was thinking of something like that for the dining room above wainscoting but I'm guessing hand painted silk is waaaaaay out of my budget : ). I was thinking a very tone on tone stencil. We will be doing wainscoting 2/3 up the walls in there.

Ok - some updated pictures. I'm trying to get geared up to paint but am really stuck on paint/curtains. I've picked a couple different options for paint SW 6260 unique gray (plum undertones) and SW6071 Popular Gray (brown undertones) but I can't seem to invision curtains with either of these colors. Help!!! I am struggling so much with these rooms!!!

I thought you were changing out chandler? I guess of the two the SW purple under tones is best. Paint then worry about windows.

Hi travisinteriors - I will change the chandeliers when I paint. Have to do the ceiling - that is the only way I will get husband to agree to take them down and put them back up again. He'll still be annoyed though! I feel like I should know what I'm doing for curtains before painting since paint colors are almost infinite and fabric can be more limited.

Best bet for window coverings when not sure…sheers that match the color of the walls, but I would buy some white sheer panels, they are generally inexpensive, and put them up on the rod for the time being. If you don't like the "quietness" of them, you can always change them when you are done with everything else.
