Kitchen help!!!

We just had new granite countertops installed and they ended up so far from what we had thought they would be. The color is Blue Flowers (AKA Blue Galaxy and Blue Flower) and they came out so much more creamy/yellow than we expected. Now we feel like we just spend thousands of dollars on something that totally killed what we were working towards. We have cool blues throughout our house and that’s why we went with this granite that has some blue/gray “flowers” in it. Does anyone have ideas for how we could work these counters in a little better? They just look so warm and yellowy against the bright white cabinetry. Would you paint the lower cabinets and island a different color? Please help us with any ideas or suggestions you have!!

Lots of ways to approach this room.

I actually like the dark teal wall. It does look nice with the rug. Are you considering this color yet?
Have fun with this room, you have a beautiful piano to begin with.

Don’t worry! There appears to be some white along with the creamy white in your beautiful granite. The granite looks very nice with your cabinets. You may want to try more ‘white’ lightbulbs in your two hanging fixtures. Some bulbs have a slightly yellowish light which can affect the counter material. Go to a lighting store: the people there may be able to direct you to the correct bulb.

@ljptwt7 We're not sure about wall color for that room! If we keep that rug in there then that teal certainly does match well.

I wanted to thank everyone for the tremendous amount of help that has been offered to us so far. We have been able to dial in our lighting thanks to the suggestion of a few of you. We ended up settling on the 4000K LED recessed lights on a dimmer and then 4000K LED's in the island pendants as well. 4000K brightens our stone up beautifully without giving us the headache and sterile feeling of the 5000K daylight bulbs. We have 2700K LED strip lighting under our cabinets so at night we dim the 4000K recessed lights and turn those on and together they look great!

We were also able to paint our pantry door (and front door) in BM Wrought Iron. Thank you so much to @Beth H. : and @Flo Mangan for those wonderful ideas. We love how the doors turned out and are excited to keep going. Our backsplash is getting installed on Monday and then we will be ready to paint the kitchen/dining walls!

Great! Can’t wait to see backsplash. What grout did you select? Just curious.

We’re leaning towards alabaster at the moment. I’ve gotta go pick it up in the morning!

    Which brand?

  • PRO

Take some pure white paper or card stock with you to compare tones. That always helps. You probably don't want a bright white. A white/light that blends with main tones in the tile.

That’s a great tip. The brand is Mapei.

OK, I have to look it up, but it is a good light one. You have to compare it to the tile, of course. We can help, but we don't have good accuracy on exact color on screens, as you know.

I can’t get good pictures on the internet and I lent my sample brochure of Mapei out. Grr. Anyway. If in doubt go darker rather than lighter. Dark recedes whiter pops.

Mapei Warm Gray would be a better match. it actually looks like a warm creamy gray. I have w/my subways in the shower. it's like a soft white, with gray undertones. would look perfect w/your granite

what tile did you end up w/ith?

    We’re going with this tile

Paint base cabinets the blue in the slab

There’s another grout color we didn’t see before. It’s called cobblestone and they have a small display of our tile with it. We grabbed a bag of that and a bag of warm gray as those ended up being our two favorites.

    I like warm gray best.

You have a beautiful home, but changing your paint color could really bring it together.

Here’s the backsplash. We love it!! We were leaning towards cobblestone grout but chose warm gray in the end and we are so glad we listened to you guys because it’s perfect.

Looks great! Can't wait to see the post-painting pics. And I do think if you can put the TV on the long wall and not above the fireplace, you will have a nice cozy room!

Now onto the paint! With the black pantry door and the backsplash installed should we still be thinking along the same lines as before?

Honestly the colour right now is lovely.

Any chance you will take out carpet and extend hardwood? Or am I not seeing correctly what is there?

As A S said it does look nice. I would want color so I would paint the wall a smokey blue grey, but that's me. Are you changing the curtains in the dining area? If so, maybe that would be enough.
Beautiful choices with cabinets, counter, floor and backsplash!

Update! We had some extra blue/gray paint that we used in an office space upstairs so we decided to give that a shot before buying anything else. The color is Sherwin Williams Cyberspace and we painted all three walls so it was consistent. We also had some extra curtains that we ended up taking down from another room and they seem to coordinate really well with the paint and the more modern lines we have going. What does everyone here think?

    Seriously stunning!

That’s a WOW! The paint just nailed it. You did such a great job, with help I know, from Flo and Beth and other Houzzers. The kitchen is stunning, and definitely not run-of-the-mill. Bravo!!

Ahhh we're so glad you all like it because we love it! Thank you again to everyone who helped us get here.

What do you all think of the black door with the blue walls? Does it work? We were thinking Beth's suggestion of a brown wood door might work a little better, maybe?

And what do you think of these bar stools? Would it be too much blue with the walls?

  • PRO

Like those stools. They are open enough they would work. I think the pantry door is fine. Better not everything matchy matchy! Besides it is on a different plane so not a problem at all. I like it.

Maybe this will help. You do have black in microwave and range so Black repeated 3 times is perfect. 😉

Your kitchen is beautiful! I say this because it is VERY much like our colors - floors, cabinets, and counter top are all just like ours. Our granite is actually Blue Nile, just a bit lighter than yours, but same colors. We originally chose a slab of Blue Flowers, but found it had some fissures so we didn't get it. Our next choice was White Ice - but it had too creamy of a background for our white cabinets. Luckily found a slab of Blue Nile (which I don't think is too available). It is perfect.

This is a very fine tuned question...the color on the wall makes the strongest color statement..the black door and slightly lighter blue stools sort of diminish that statement..i would match the door to the walls...and look at white stools... or possibly the creamy color of the stone tops

The upholstery color of dining chairs looks like a good option

I would agree with doing white stools. Same style you picked but white. Looks great!

I like the blue stools that Flo suggested.

Love the blue stools, they are perfect.

I love the wall paint, looks fabulous in your kitchen. I think the black door is fine but if you found a door like Beth pictured that would be really nice.

Since we were able to work the blue into the kitchen we’re hoping we can pull off the same in the front piano room. What do you think of this rug we picked up?

  • PRO

The colors seem all off. 🤨. You need some of your wall colors and some black probably or very neutral. Bbl with some ideas.

  • PRO

Something like this would work. The one you showed is too big for your room. You need approximately 12” around sides.

Haha sorry I’m not sure if you remember from earlier in the thread but we will be painting the walls. That teal was just an experiment from another rug. And we have two rolled up rugs on the ends of that new one because it just came in the mail today and the sides are bent up!
