Dining Room Design

We decided to purchase the cabinet in the attached photos. Does this cabinet work or should we move it to another room? We would like to replace the chandelier but have not found one we like yet. Any other design suggestions to help coordinate the pieces?

Also, another question I had was whether the mirror on the wall goes with the set, or if you think a gold mirror would look better? I'm happy to change up the dining room if you think the rug, cabinet, and/or mirror do not work with the table and chairs. Thanks for the help!

Hi amose13! Are you able to change the color of the cabinet?

Hi Lyvonne-Unfortunately, I cannot change the color of the cabinet. I'm not sure if you can see from the picture, but it's a gold color currently, and there is gold trim on the table. I could move the cabinet to another room though, and purchase a different cabinet to display china/crystal. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks for the help! I was just looking at your ideabooks...I like your ideas! Thanks again.

I love the cabinet but it doesn't feel right next to the door. I think your instincts are right and it needs its own wall. Maybe the long wall? I can't really see the rug in the pictures but the spots don't go with the chair pattern. Too much going on.

Ps the table is gorgeous. Definitely a keeper.

Thanks marchmain! Unfortunately, since the table is on the wider side, I think it might be a tight squeeze with the cabinet on the long wall. I'll measure to see if it could possibly work! The rug is an animal print..I've been thinking that a more traditional print may work better. If you have seen anything that you think mite work, I'd appreciate it. Thanks for the help!

That carpet is throwing everything off, too busy, and wrong color, something in the same color as chair fabric, would be nice. It can be textured or flat piled but one color. Also I would take off those finials and molding from top of cabinet, it's to dating. The mirror's nice.

Thanks eneaf! I'll keep my eye out for a new rug!

amose13 - you're welcome. I agree w/marchmain and eneaf that a different rug would look better.

It is a really great rug though. Can it go in a bedroom?

Could you upload a close up picture of the chair pattern?

agree with the rug suggestions. table/chairs lovely.. more formal. The new cabinet? I would find another room... while I love mixing woods/styles -- its just a bit too casual to be paired with your great table! IMO.

That's a great picture. Thanks! That helps.

So, we start with the cabinet & the rug. I'll look around for some rugs - we have some that might work but I'll look at other stores too.

Then we can look at chandeliers and mirrors & art!

    Enough shopping for you? :)

Hi Lyvonne! Sorry for the delayed response. It's been a crazy week! I like the neutral rug, but my only concern is that the entire carpeting in my house is a similar shade. I was hoping to add a little color, but I guess I could do that to the walls. What do you think? As you requested, attached are a few pics of the mirror. Thanks for your help!

I am going out on a limb here, but I would pick up the fine details at the top of the cabinet which to me is almost Asian. You can add two bamboo looking gold mirrors or you can go red or a color. I would also use 2 "bamboo' light fixtures over the table. It would add color and a lighter feel.

    No apologies necessary amose13!

I think we add color with the accessories but leave the rug neutral.

So first thing is to find the cabinet. Do you have to have a full china cabinet or would a buffet do? Do you have a budget in mind already? You will need a rug, cabinet, chandelier, and at least one piece of art. I also vote for a new mirror. Good thing you love shopping.

Do you have a favorite artist or style of art?

I actually think that the cabinet can work with the right accessories. as above. You probably need a brighter rug too.

Lyvonne-We would prefer having something to put our crystal in, so we would like a piece that has some type of display, if possible. Our problem is our dining room is on the longer side, but more narrow. Since our table is wide, the only place a cabinet can go is on the wall we currently have it. The dimensions would need to be W 47 x D20 x H 89. Of course if you found a buffet that you think would be nice, we would consider it. We don't really have a budget in mind. Regarding art, we don't have much art in our house at all right now, as this is a new house for us. I would love to hear your advice on what you think would like nice with the table/chairs.

Staged for Perfection-Thanks for the suggestions! I know my husband would like to keep the cabinet in the dining room, and I like the mirror you suggested. I'm not sure the chandelier is really our taste, but I like the idea! I'll do some searching! Thanks for the help-really appreciate it!

amose13 - what is the wood & finish on your table & chairs? Cherry high gloss? Do you remember who made it/ where you bought it?

    ~Lyvonne
Yes-The table and chairs are by Theodore Alexander and the style is called Gabrielle. From the description, it says it's flame mahogany veneer. The buffet that went with the table would not fit in our dining room. We bought the set at Sheffield's Furniture. Hope this helps!

Thanks - it does help! So does the wood on the current cabinet match the table? In the pictures it looks like it does not match. But it might match in person. Sorry if I didn't ask that before.

(If it does match, then maybe you can just change the top of the current cabinet - it is that element that really conflicts with the style of the room.)

The cabinet is beautiful, just not for this room. It doesn't do justice to the cabinet, but don't get rid of it..it's a wonderful piece. I think for the area you are looking at, you would be better off finding a wood that matched the table or even the chandelier.
