Replacing Eugenia in small courtyard facing neighbors

I want to replace 8 to 9 Eugenia in a small courtyard facing neighbors as a hedge screen to cover second floor, so the hedge needs to grow 15 to 20 feet. I don’t want to use systemic for Eugenia. any recommendations? Worried that privet may not reach height and that podocarpus will be huge, messy and that it will destroy the house. I live in San Diego.

Pittosporum tenuifolium could work, something like 'Silver Sheen'.

Patricia, the OP explained why they needed a 20' tall hedge - 2 story privacy screening. Both the eugenia, podocarpus and pitt are fast growing and quite upright evergreen shrubs used extensively for that purpose in warmer climates.

And if you are going to be giving out landscaping and gardening advice (although being a kitchen designer), you might want to research what a systemic is. Could help with your gardening credibility.

hedge usually means sheared or pruned at some given height ... how will you do such at 15 to 20 feet??

most things that grow to that height.. with any speed ... are not going to magically stop at said height ....

how much width do you have at ground level ... again.. anything that gets to 15 feet tall .. is going to take a lot of space at the ground ...

I have no idea what systemic means and honestly why do you need a 20’ hedge at all.

Thank you gardengal48! I need something denser than the silver sheen , silver sheen is beautiful but will not give me the privacy I need... any other recommendations? Thanks!

Check out the species......looks denser than Silver Sheen.

Another possibility is a clumping bamboo. Bambusa multiplex 'Alphonse Karr' is a popular variety for screening that will attain 20-25'. These are very well behaved plants that do not try to take over the planet but remain in a slowly increasing clump like a very tall ornamental grass......which is precisely what they are :-)
