I prefer to keep a detailed description of what the breakers power beside the breaker panel. It's more obvious for the 'next guy' since nobody would think to look behind a receptacle cover for a label if they didn't know it was there.

But if you find it handy, then there's nothing wrong with it!

In my last house, I put little stick-on numbers representing the circuits - usually one per breaker - so that if one receptacle fails, I know which breaker is involved. On my current house, the builder identified the circuits in the breaker box, but some are pretty general - like one says "LR lights and outlets" and another says "LR outlets". Writing that information on the inside of the outlet cover seems like a good idea!

Greg, it’s more of a tip. I also have a printed excel spreadsheet of the circuits and their descriptions but some circuits are jam packed while others just have one or two fixtures. I also did an AutoCAD layout, printed a PDF and uploaded it to google drive so it’s readily available.

I make a floor plan with all outlets and lights on it and put the circuit number next to each location, then tack it up next to the panel.
