kitchen sink placement not aligned with window or base cabinets

Hi everyone,

I would appreciate your advice.

I am renovating my kitchen. Trying to save costs by reusing the cabinets and just changing the countertop, backsplash, sink and faucet. I realise that not changing the cabinets means I am restricted in changing the layout of the kitchen.

One of the things I was hoping I could get was some more space between the stove and the sink which are beside each other with very little countertop prep space. My plumber suggested that I could move the sink to the right side of the window so it it not centered and this would give me more space. However that means that the sink will not be aligned to the base cabinets either. I am willing to live with a non-centered window (it is currently sightly off centre to begin with) but not having it also aligned with the base cabinets is IMO going to look to hodge podge.

Do you agree with the me or do you think it can be done and wont look too weird? Any advice you can give is appreciated. Here is a photo. please ignore mess :)

You could also get a sink that has a built in drainboard on the left side, have a drainboard cut the fit the left half of the sink, or have a cutting board made the length from the center of the sink to the stove. That way, when you need counter space you have it, albeit with only half the sink. At other times, you have your centered sink.

What a lovely window! I would center a single bowl sink in the base cabinet and get a cutting board made to fit over the left half of the sink, to increase the prep space. If you need more prep space you can move to the right of the sink.

You could go with a smaller sink and center it in the cabinet. I'm not sure how your plumber could move the sink any more to the right without major surgery to the corner cabinet. Does that corner cabinet have a hinged door? Is it a lazy susan?

@mama goose_gw zn6OH and @yvonnecmartin I do like the idea of getting a cutting board over the left side of the sink! Thanks for that

@missenigma I already purchased a double bowl sink which I love. I have no dishwasher and a family of four so wanted a nice size sink. He was suggesting to cut into the inside frame of the right part of the cabinet in order to get the sink to fit to the right. You wouldn't see if from the outside. The right part is not a lazy susan - just a regular corner cabinet.

Here's an idea for the future – have an apron-front sink centred under the right side window only, which means your corner cupboard has a lower front panel, whether you decide to keep the hinge on the right side or move it to the left side. Add another drawer where the current left-side double sink is. Maintain the double-door that's currently under the sink.
