Protecting garlic planting

This is my first year growing garlic. I built a raised bed, planted the cloves and then (after listening to Mike McGrath on You Bet Your Garden) I covered the bed with chicken wire to keep the squirrels from digging up the cloves. This was about two weeks ago and now almost all the garlic in the first bed has sprouted. So do I leave the wire over the bed and allow the garlic to grow through it, or is it safe to remove the wire now?
