Is it Possible to Remove Polyurethane Without Stripping the Stain?

Hi all,

I was wondering if it's possible to remove an oil based polyurethane without stripping the oil based stain from windows and trim?

We added some new wood windows to our house. We didn't know what brand/color the stain was on the existing windows. We matched it pretty close by looking at different stains at the local hardware store. The one we chose looked like an exact match to the stain on the existing windows. However, after we added a poly coating to the windows and trim, the new windows look much darker than the existing windows. Is there any way to remove the poly coating from the new windows and trim without damaging the stain? Thank you.

Might be easier to make your old windows darker. If you strip them with chemicals some of the base stain will be embedded in the grain . I would not worry about the re staining as that would be the easy part.
