Giant sandbox into garden?

We recently moved into a house with a giant (like 6x6 ft) sandbox in the back. There's no way to cover the sand to keep it clean, so I'd like to figure out something else to do with it. I'm trying to figure out if I can plant in it? I read that the wood may be treated and so bad for vegetables, but curious what people think? And, are there things - plants or vegetables - I could plant in the sand? (I just keep thinking a million carrots ;)) Should I buy dirt and put it on top? Should I try to get rid of the sand altogether? I'm not sure I'm up for a gigantic project, but I'd love any ideas!
