It is highly unlikely that a modern home is experiencing structural failure.

I would start by checking windows and doors, see if they operating properly and not sticking, etc, check the floors if you notice them leaning to one side if there is a basement if you see foundation walls have large vertical cracks, etc.

If you don't see major visual signs of failure, most likely it's a cosmetic issue due to seasonal changes and if still not sure, I would get a licensed contractor there first to evaluate everything and get his opinion, most licensed contractors will tell you if this is a structural issue or cosmetic.

The original architect is not a structural engineer, nor is a home inspector. That said, if you called some renovation contractors and/or inspectors and asked who they would recommend to evaluate settling and cracks, you could see whose name keeps coming up. Also, there's your local building permitting office. They can't recommend anyone (govt agencies are supposed to be neutral), but if you word it right, they might give you a name or two under the guise of 'these are people we've worked with'. They may or may not do so, but if they do, they won't give you the name of anyone they don't trust to do a good job. But make sure you talk to an inspector if at all possible.
