Quilt challenge after storm at sea foundation piecing

My last two lap quilts were Storm at Sea - for my skill set very challenging. Probably an easier way to get those points right, match them up and sew triangles, diamonds ... started decades ago, finished last year. Wound up making foundation paper blocks in pattern sections to get it right. It was important to me to do my best because these were gifts.

Taking a break from mad work of carefully matching things I decided to challenge myself in the opposite direction. Those of you who are perfectionists would find this a real challenge - get a pattern idea in your head, don't make a pattern. Cut,flip, sew - not quite a crazy quilt because I'm replicating the blocks but crazy because I'm allowing each block to breathe on it's own without the confines of exact measurements. Some strips will be wider than others, some rectangles larger, smaller. In the end I cut the blocks down to the same size and stitch together accepting whatever happens to be the end result.

I'll post pics later today. Recycling old velvet quilt that could not be saved.

test run with other fabrics playing with cutting away bits.

More corners to add, thinking orange hibiscus floral fabric like the yellow one. Down the road I want to embroider crazy quilt stitches, ideas into the velvet patches.

Not aiming for perfect, aiming for sew, enjoy, play, sew, enjoy, play. No rules. No pattern.

That would be a real challenge for me. I've always considered myself more of a technician than an artist. High on the "follow the rules" scale; low on creativity. I don't think that being that "free" would be enjoyable for me. I guess I like structure too much. It will be interesting to see the final product. Enjoy!

You would like a book by Victoria Findlay Wolfe called Fifteen Minutes of Play. I bought it when I visited her shop in New York, but it's a little too playful for me.

Just searched for Victoria Findlay online - thanks! I have a lot of odd sized pieces that don't match what I'm doing now - mmmmmmmmm - going to need lots of play activities this winter. I do like the idea of tying crazy pieced blocks together with similar strips of plain fabric. Mmmmm.

I used to watch Eleanor Burns years ago on PBS quilt show. Always cheerful encouraging sewers to just get sewing. Love her! Yeah, I guess I'm doing Cracker Box Pattern - at the moment. I'm thinking of further slicing up the pieces once I get them into same sized blocks and add more fabrics....we'll see.
