I bought lights to put along our roofline. Since the lights cannot reach the exterior plug, I plugged into outdoor rated extension cord. Is it ok for the connection where the lights plug into extension cord to just be laying out in yard without being covered? Seems like getting rained on or something would be issue But I’m clueless about this stuff lol. Saw cord covers & this diy one online. Is it necessary

Electricity and water are a deadly mix. Yes, that connection must be made water proof.

I've never bothered and I've never had an issue as I'm sure millions of other people have too. I just assumed that an outdoor extension cord and outdoor lights will have a tight connection. If your outdoor outlet is GFCI, then it'll trip before anything bad happens.

But I don't put the connection in a spot where it'll be in a puddle when the snow melts. That's the extent of the precautions that I take.
