They are not appropriate if your ceiling is 8ft tall. The quality of the light from the bulbs is not enough without downlights to supplement.

This type of fixture comes in various sizes, so if a smaller version, are in proportion to island, and you like the type of light it will provide, I think they would work

I dont like the "stuck to the ceiling" look but without seeing your space we are all just guessing at numbers and not visuals.
