First home, need help: Kitchen

I am about to close on my first house that I will be purchasing all by myself and would like some design suggestions. The kitchen is a galley style and I’m considering replacing the upper cabinets and adding a backsplash. I also dislike the floors but they run throughout the house so probably won’t be replacing those right now. All suggestions are welcome.

Houzzers like to suggest you live in the house for a year and see how it functions for you and what really aggravates you. There is also the possibility that other issues may surface that take priority (HVAC, plumbing, roofing, foundation problems.) Galleys are my favorite kind of kitchen and the layout should work. Be sure to get a counter depth fridge if possible so the space isn't eaten visually by a hulking appliance.

I’d think about new light at ceiling/ hardware on cabs and backsplash if counters remain . I’d leave the upper cabs . If you want to do something for the heck of it then pull the counters off / pick new counter and backsplash and single sink. New counter and backsplash will give you chance to change looks, so floor may not be as irksome to you.

I like your floors, and your cabinets. I’m not a fan of your countertops. Replacing the countertops and getting a different sink and faucet wouldn’t be a huge project—but where is your fridge? If it’s in the pics I’m missing it. Deco is right to suggest trying this out before you sink money into the layout, because you may find that you really want to rework the configuration.

I haven’t moved in yet that’s why there isn’t a fridge, I thought about new countertops But wasn’t sure what would be more cost effective.

Looks like the fridge belongs against the wall on the side across from the sink; there's an empty space and a small upper cabinet there in the first photo. The layout looks okay and the cabinets aren't bad at all, but if you are short on storage space it would make sense to get taller uppers that go all the way to the ceiling. Otherwise new counters, a backsplash and some nice hardware would be a less expensive update that would give you a lot of bang for your buck.

I love galley kitchens. I grew up in a house with a narrow U kitchen - so basically a galley with an additional short wall - it was so efficient, turn around and what you needed was right there. I think you have a lot of potential with your kitchen - move in and wait a while for any major $$ drops on it while you figure out what you really want to do. Some jazzy paint and accessories can go a long way in the meantime.
