I agree with adding two rugs as Beverly suggested. To make it easy, when you find a design you like, order it in the two different sizes. What you do with the stairs, if anything, all depends on what you do with the entry rugs. Personally, I like that your stair carpeting is neutral and clean, so I wouldn't worry about it if this were my house.

How about a very practical half-circle rug for the doorway entry, but a real rug, not a doormat, and then another rug in front of the chest? I don’t think they need to be important rugs, either of them, and best if they don’t match. Just that they don’t claSh. Maybe the rug in front of the hall chest coulf pick up the firey hue of the lamp beyonD. If I can come up with an example I’ll post a pic.
