The easiest thing is to get a boring set ( your words not mine!). I prefer my home to look collected rather than purchased- my bed is custom cerused oak four poster left over from my last home, night stands are custom navy floating, chest of drawers is vintage. Go to a better furniture store and walk around and see what you like. If you fall in love with a set- great! Otherwise buy individual pieces that you love and fit the space.

I don't think everything needs to match. My bedroom set is a fairly new dark wooden headboard from ..... well, I can't remember where from LOL, but it's fairly modern looking One side table is made of bamboo and rattan. The other one has iron legs and a bamboo top. The tables are fairly small, as I have limited space.

I have also seen a small dresser used as a side table and storage. I am 'TEAM MIX IT UP" all the way!

I feel your pain! When we moved into a brand new home I finally got a bedroom set. Solid wood, gorgeous and matching because, to me, it was perfect because we’d never had anything but mis-matches. It was also very easy. Now, 20 years later, I’m bored with it, yes. It’s still beautiful and in perfect condition so I’ve split it up and use the dresser in another room and re-purposed the outdated armoire. My point is, even if you bought a set now you love, you’re not locked in. I’ve gotten much better at the “eclectic “ look shall we say. Though, we did buy a matching sofa and loveseat for the family room because it was more cohesive for the room.
