Looks like a nice table. You'll have to sand everything to get the old finish and stain off prior to refinishing, and that task will be difficult on the curves parts of the base - difficult but doable if you're patient.

As far as filling gaps - are you referring to the vertical joints in your second photo, or the small gouges? Either way, I'd probably not use any filler if it was my table. Instead, I'd sand everything, possibly stain if you don't like the natural color, and use a clear wipe-on satin finish (I prefer oil-based poly but many other options exist). Small gouges will be visible but not nearly as obvious if you adequately remove that dark finish.

Thanks! I sanded & refinished one of these years ago - took forever but it was worth it. Yes it's the vertical joints I'm not sure about - the gaps are wider than I'd like them to be, but I guess I should accept that's part of the character of the table. thanks again

If you *really* want to fill those gaps, maybe consider clear epoxy. But if you apply a stain over it, then of course any visible wood under the epoxy won't match the stained portion.

It’s English from the turn of the century, if the finish is original you might luck out and it’s shellac which dissolves with alcohol. I would skip the driftwood finish though, Grey is going out and will fight your floors. If you want light just put a clear finish on it.

Glad I decided to post as your comments have helped me a lot to decide what to do. I'm going to try refinishing without filler - test with alcohol first, and a similar stain colour to the existing. Thanks again.
