BM Pale Oak is one of my favorite paint colors for your situation. It's probably going to read lighter than this most of the time with the west and south facing room.

You can compare the key characteristics of colours before sampling.

Too dark? Turn up the Value

Too yellow? Turn down the Chroma.

This stuff gets so scientific it makes my head hurt. Watching a few of the videos you linked to Beth makes me realize maybe I'm looking for off-white rather than white. I didn't even know there was a difference, but guess there is!

Hands down…B.M. Linen White. If the trim is a good white, do the walls in Linen. Decorator’s White is a great match for Linen White.

Sheen question:

What do you think of sheen on the trim? There is not a lot of trim in the apartment - just baseboards and door frames. I have always lived in historic homes way older than this place and have loved a very flat wall and flat trim look all in the same color. But here there is so little going on that I am temped to vary the sheen on the trim.

Ceiling question:

I usually paint a ceiling the same color as the walls but with 50% pigment. What are your thoughts on ceiling painting in this space?

Thanks LP. I'm so excited about the floors too. I signed up for a Maria Killiam course when I was selecting paint colors for my current houses' exterior and I wasn't in love with it. These bloggers drive me a bit nuts because their posts are so horrifically long and full of so much BS that it is a lot to weed through when I really just want concise info and comparisons. I was hoping folks would throw a bunch of suggestions up here so I could avoid the world of color blogs. But, I will check out land of color. Perhaps more brass tacks...

I second BM Linen White for walls, trim, and ceilings. I had it in my previous house, a center hall Colonial, for 26 years. It looks great in sunny rooms.

Thanks for the soft chamois and linen white suggestions. Glad to hear you had good experience with Samplize. It is a great suggestion to narrow it down via those samples and then apply three to make the final selection. Curious why you bought quart size containers to sample instead of the small sample size containers. Is it so you could try the various sheens?

I like wood work and walls the same color…if the woodwork isn’t anything special, so no reason toe highlight it, do walls and trim the same. If wall are decent condition do eggshell (and trim), if in poor condition use a flat finish (and trim.

I usually paint my ceiling my trim color, and I am wonderful if linen white, even cut, will make the room too “warm”. I’d do Decorator’s white…that’s my favorite with linen.
