keep it or toss it

Hello! I have a question about bedroom furniture. I have an older (but quality) bedroom set made by Lexington Furniture. I’ve noticed that none of the pics on Houzz seem to have matched sets anymore. Im assuming this is a dated look. I’d like to get rid of it but hubby says to hold on; the look will return. What do you think? I’m talking dresser, chest and night stands.

I need to see the whole room and all the pieces IMO chalk paint works best with much less orante pieces more kind of country. But I need to see more. I often take pieces from sets and use them somewhere else like that armoire piece could go in a walk in closet to hold accessories.

Upon further evaluation I think I have some ideas from your suggestions. The tall armoire definitely is simply too big in the room and impedes on the walking space. It has to go. The dresser isn’t all that bad if I remove the ornate mirror. The nightstands are pretty functional even though I don’t love them Maybe I can swap the nightstands to another room and paint the inexpensive ones from the guest room thereby getting rid of all the matching. When I get home I will reevaluate. Well houzz allow a video if I did a circular of the room?

Nice pieces but they are a bit ... overbearing.

Definitely would NOT paint any of these pieces -- that will decrease any value as a vintage or antique piece

If, however, you're not trying to keep them in their original condition, consider taking a saw to them rather than a paint brush.

Cut the top ornate trim part off both the armoire and the mirror and you've instantly made them much less overbearing. Either cut the piece level or have the top edge of the cabinet and mirror sloped/slanted backward so you don't see the coat. Then you can use a furniture product -- Old English dark scratch remover -- to darken the cut.

Once you have cut the clunky top decorative pieces off, remove the chair and all the art and decorations to unclutter the room and then rethink placement of your storage and any decorative pieces you might want.

If you ultimately decided one must go, one thing to consider is that you might well get more storage for the floor space used from a taller narrower cabinet than a shorter wider one, however, the KIND of storage and each one provides also matters -- hanging space vs. cabinets with shelves vs. drawers, large and small drawers. Shelves could always be added to a hanging space in a tall cabinet and used with or without baskets.

You can always donate to a good cause. Recently I took a pair of high-quality, genuine MCM night tables to Goodwill. They couldn't believe it, and said they would sell immediately. I didn't need or want them anymore. Win/win.

Look closely at the top of your tall cabinet and mirror and see if you can remove just that odd center carving but leave the gracefully curved top. If so, wrap that decorative piece and store it away for when your piece moves beyond vintage to become an antique.

Do let us know how it all turns out.

Definitely would NOT paint any of these pieces -- that will decrease any value as a vintage or antique piece

They have very little re-sale value no matter what it done to them. I wouldn't hesitate to paint them.

Wow y’all of been extremely helpful thank you very much. I am going to show you what I feel needs to be addressed. When we walk into the room the view is immediately taken over by this huge armoire and the chair in the corner gets squished out.

This is the view of our bedroom Once I have entered the bedroom

Sitting in our bed and watching the TV.

Also from our bed looking at the opposite wall

We have matching nightstands and the dogs bed in the corner LOL

Last view is also from the bed looking toward the exit.

So, I definitely can remove the overbearing mirror. I cannot remove the top of the armoire. Even if I did I feel like it blocks the view coming into the room and makes me feel very cramped when we sit in the chair. Every time we watch the grandkids they get in bed with us in the morning and my daughter often sits in that chair drinking her coffee in the armoire is open and into her face. I decided to remove the curtains which really were useless since we never closed them. They just felt like they balked up the room even more.
I know I need to rearrange some art work. My biggest complaint right now is the bulk of the armoire. I’m not averse to putting the TV on the wall.

The reflection of the dog on the bed is my favorite part of the post.

You have some great pieces to work with. Start with small changes. I would first change the mirror and then the hardware. Keep the nightstands. They are great. Love the bedding. Work on updating some of your accessories and artwork. See how that goes. Post pictures as you go along with The updates

The only piece I would consider removing is the armoire. Not the greatest solution, but you could use the dresser as a tv stand in order to move the armoire.

I’m curious about the accessories. I have my great grandma’s clock which I keep in the bedroom because it would not fit my minimalist mindset. Other than that I only have photos and my husbands pile of stuff to do on his nightstand. Do you mean the lamps? I’m taking off the mirror right now hopefully waiting for other comments and what you mean about assessor he’s. Thank you so very much.

wow such a great recommended item , great

Get rid of the armoire and move the dresser to that wall. No mirror there. Move the smaller console with the picture frames to where the dresser was. Find a smaller, non-matchy mirror and hang it over the console. That should open things up a bit.

Lkloes, I like that!!!! Today we are moving the lamps up higher and repairing the walls where the curtains came down. I really like your idea and I’m anxious to try it.

Rather than lugging furniture around to see what fits where, draw, to scale (graph paper), the size and shape of your room, noting the measurement of the walls and including all windows and doors. Then, on another paper or index card stock, draw, also to scale, the "footprint" of each piece of furniture in the room.

See if your furniture might fit in another place such as swapping the placement of the dresser and the armoire but leaving the bed where it is.

Alternately, you might try setting your headboard against the wall where the dresser is and putting the armoire against the wall where the headboard has been, with the matching dresser across from it -- both as close to the exterior wall as is practical -- but that might mean hanging lights on the wall above the headboard instead of using the two bed side cabinets.

While you're deciding what you want to do with the room, consider removing, wrapping and boxing ALL the photographs and art and decorations in the room, leaving only the matching wood furniture and lamps. Temporarily at least, also move out the chair and plant stand and metal shelf (with baskets) and all the items atop all the furniture, including the clock Re starting with only the original wood bedroom set in the room should help give you a new perspective.

Idk if this is on topic, but to me 2 pictures above the basket/photo unit are too much, and not 'needed'. It makes for a heavy look. One is likely fine... plenty going on.

It looks like switching the armoire and chest could work?...chair may fit next to armoire on that wall?

Is there a walk- in closet some where ?...how much storage do you really need?...

I’ve been getting such wonderful ideas from you all. To be honest, I did not choose that bedroom suit and I don’t love it. Removing the massive mirror and getting rid of the ornate armoire actually is right for me. I felt obligated to keep it, but you’ve given me courage to free myself from that mindset. And the world certainly won’t fall apart if I break up the suit :-). Thanks for helping me get over that hurdle!!!! The idea of changing the bed to another wall is not a possibility. We have our coffee in bed in the morning and can see the sunrise over our little Southern mud puddle lake. We would lose the view by changing the bed. The little thingy that looks like a plant stand actually is an air filter that we have to keep in the bedroom. (Because of the dog). I can afford to lose the storage of the armoire, considering that most of it’s taken up by the television in the top part. I should lay out the room on graph paper because the chair may be a problem. I can’t believe the difference raising the lamps and removing the draperies made! I agree those pictures are too heavy over the console. I will remove all the art and start over. I’ll keep ya posted!!!

First donate the mirror over the dresser. Buy a large floor mirror, place it where it reflects your view.
Change the hardware on the furniture.
Paint your walls, check out color Beachcomber ,Emerald Paint line , from Sherwin Williams.
New bedding will make a huge difference.

I agree with Ikloes ideas. There also appears to be too much furniture for the size of the room, but the only piece I can see to move out is the hope chest at the end of the bed. That gone would make a generous walking space to the sitting nook. Don't worry about trending with unmatched pieces. You have a treasure in that set.

You are right, there is too much furniture in the room. We built a screened in porch off of our bedroom and it has tremendously decreased amount of light coming into our room. Nothing at all comes through the transom and only minimally through the doors. . There are no other windows. I do believe the armoire is too large and creates so many shadows I don’t know how to get around it. I’ve had two years of keeping “my stuff” from the downsize. I’m willing to start thinking about letting it go :-). I will try switching the two pieces, but I feel like It may appear dwarfed on the other wall and I really don’t like it enough to struggle with it. We shall seek!!!

I LOVE the idea of a large floor mirror. I priced out painting the room a year ago. It would have to include the bedroom and walk in closet and was really prohibitive, considering we painted three years ago. Especially the beachcomber color, while beautiful, would make it a cave. The room is already dark because of lack of windows. I want this room to work by removing and rearranging. I would consider painting the headboard wall if that would make a difference. But I can’t go very dark and I can’t paint whole room.

If you're truly a minimalist at heart, remove everything except the bed and dresser base. This will include all the art and rug. I know it is a pain, but center the bed on that wall and re-mount the two wall lamps just above the headboard where the curve breaks to the straight part. You'll have to do some repair of the wall, but the corded parts will be hidden behind the bed. This may be your excuse to lighten that wall color to a different shade from the same color strip card as the other walls. At mattress height install a floating shelf on either side of the bed to replace the nightstands and keep the more minimalist feeling you like. Change the pulls on the dresser and set the TV on top of it, or wall mount it so it is comfortable to watch while reclining in bed and place where the armoire is now. Then bring the chair back in and see if you still like it. Perhaps a chaise would be nice instead. Select it, bedding and the rug together. The wall opposite the light source should have a wonderful large painting to substitute for the view in inclement weather.

If you swapped location of the dresser and armoire, perhaps the (altered) mirror would reflect more natural light into the room?

would lose the metal stand and baskets and that storage before losing the armoire. You could create a wall hung box shelf (or two -- his and hers -- for between above your dresser and below your (altered) mirror to hold the items now atop that stand. This basic idea sized to fit your space:

    https://www.amazon.com/Tribesigns-Mounted-Console-Floating-43-3x13x9-8/dp/B082KG9PNS/ref=sr_1_23?dchild=1&keywords=floating+shelves+for+dvd+player&qid=1616364358&sr=8-23

The metal stand would likely be very useful on your new porch.

Oh deco, that is so beautiful. I can’t be quite that minimalist because I’m also somewhat practical and I need the storage of a nightstand.. I also have to have a rug for those cold nights. Maybe minimalist is not the word, what I mean is I prefer straight clean lines over overly embellished and cluttered decor. We had already removed the bedside lamps and raised them higher. I’ll show you a picture of it. It may not be quite where are you said but it certainly lightens up the room. I’ll show you a picture. I’m totally about moving the stand to the other wall with the TV over it. In fact as soon as I can get somebody to take the armoire we will do that. The picture above our bed is one of my favorite artists, Barbara Wood. I have another one of her pictures even larger that I could put on that wall, which you recommended. I haven’t been on Houzz for at least six years but I remember you from back then!

Deco, we moved them up a foot and over about six inches.

Sets are still being used and I think if you made a few small changes, your room will feel quite different and maybe could be all that is needed.

If possible, I’d exchange dresser and armoire. Replace mirror on dresser, change hardware to a more simple design

Bedding adjustments to create a more layered and lux feel

I would remove the console table and add a mirror

Lighten your art. A soft horizontal picture above bed and prints above chair and complimentary cushion to create a little corner feel

I’ve had a couple of comments about changing the hardware. I hadn’t thought of that, but I like it! The ones Maureen chose above look good! The console and armoire are history. I’m looking for the perfect mirror as soon as I can get out. Ladies please stay with me as I continue my search. I can’t shop online so I have to go to stores.

I’ve finally gotten the furniture switched around! Please ignore the stuff under and on top of the furniture- I haven’t even worked with accessories or art yet. I’m still trying to decide whether or not to keep the armoire. It looks kind of lonely on that big wall. The console has been removed. The first picture shows definite improvement with the room opened up. I need to adjust artwork. Oh, the wall lamps were raised and that made a huge difference. Tv will be installed on the wall and hardware will be changed. Somebody mentioned a long mirror on the wall, but I wonder where to put it. The dog is happy that his bed is still in the corner. :-)

Looks better and maybe just chalk paint or replace nightstands.

What are you going to put on the wall where the armoire is now? I was thinking that the console would look good there with a mirror hung over it. That would help you reflect some light back into the room (you mentioned that it was a bit dark because of the sunroom).

I know. That’s why I have not removed the sliders under the console. I’m thinking I should put it back and find something else for the TV wall. The armoire seems to always be the stumbling block. I hate to separate the set, but I think it’s the only answer. If I put the dresser back with a better mirror, I don’t know what to do with the tv wall. I’m willing to buy if I have a good idea.

I’m sorry, I was referring to the piece with the picture frames on top and baskets underneath as the “console”. Keep the dresser where you moved it and hang the TV over it. That looks great. I was just thinking that you need something on the wall along the bed. The armoire does need to go. All you would need to buy is a mirror. You can find something at Home goods for less than $150, I’ll bet.

Lkloes. I tried the console there. It looked so minuscule and frou-frou. The wall is quite tall. I’d like to find a more substantial one, and definitely not a curvy one. Now that I’ve decided to get rid of the armoire, I
can’t wait!!!! I want it gone!!! Been to Home Goods twice-still looking for the mirror. Haven’t had a chance to look for hardware yet, but I’ll get there. The console is a good one and I’m going to put it on our patio. It will look good there.

That sounds like the perfect place for your console. Good luck with the rest. You are well on your way to having a gorgeous bedroom retreat!

Said not to be difficult process and any color could be mixed: "We took this old dresser and painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Florence, then glazed it with a dark stain to add a little distressing."

Some suggestions. I would not paint any of these pieces. I would remove the blanket box/bench and leave the armoire, which is just the right height and size for that tall wall beside the bed.

I'd pare down the wall art considerably, and just leave your one favourite piece, hung where you can see it from the bed. Where you have it now, on the wall over the headboard, there's too much going on for it to be appreciated.

The chair is nice but squashed into the corner. Center it in the space and pull it a few inches away from the wall.

You have a lot of miscellaneous neutrals. I'd replace the beige/cream bedspread with a solid blue one, taking one of the blues colour from the floral bed pillows. Add the same solid colour blue pillow to the gray chair. The blue will look good with your warm wood tone furniture, and also with your gray headboard and chair.

So please ignore all the clutter I am leaving the towels under the furniture pieces so I can continue to move them around. I’ve made several of the changes that have been suggested. I still have some problem spots. The bench at the foot of the bed was borrowed from another room and I will definitely recover it. Chest from foot of bed is relocated. I removed all of the artwork from over my bed but I feel like it looks too empty, especially over the tables. The two pieces of art on the bed must be kept. One is by my daughter the other one is by a noted artist. I need to either put them over the tables again or on the wall between the door and the headboard wall.

We will mount the TV on the wall. These pieces of art mean something to me so I must keep them, although repositioned.

Still not sure about the armoire. Someone suggested putting a long mirror to the left side of it. I like that idea but have not had a chance yet to shop for one. But it looks very sad and lonely in that spot. I am still not averse to tossing it, I just hate to lose the storage. Suggestions will be welcome, especially in positioning the art. Thank you very much, all!!

I’d like to move the armoire further to the right. But the dog.....
