All you can do is wait and see what it does during the next few years.

is it missing chunks of bark ... or is the yellow colors just bark color ...

was it leafing out before the freeze??

was there another freeze more recently.. or are you asking about the one a month back or so??

up in my MI.. hard frost and freezes are not tht rare ... trees of this size can and usually do releaf in severe circs .... but we dont grow live oak ... presuming that is what this is ...

how do the other oaks around you look???

Yes, very concerning that it isn’t leafing out. It has a few leaves around the trunk and the branches I can reach are dead. No bark missing and it isn’t yellow. One other tree near it looks the same. I think it is a black oak. Sorry the picture is fuzzy. The picture was much better before it posted. It was budding out before the freeze hit. It has been years since we have had a freeze as bad as the one we had recently. This is in east Texas. This is the other tree.

We live in eastern Carolina about half way down he slope of the plateau. Just in the last week our Nuttal oak leafed out. Two weeks ago it did not have the slightest trace of a leaf.

If it was frost damage it may take a little longer to leaf.

I would not worry about it, trees know more about handling cold weather that we will ever know.

Most oaks can come back after freeze damage to leaves. Thing is the embedded secondary buds have to emerge, and this can take time.
