help with foyer decor

last modified: 4 years ago

Should I buy 2 identical mirrors and accent tables on either side of the door or put something in front of the glass blocks? I'm not a fan of the blocks. There is 25 inches on both sides of the door. I like simple elegant decor, not too busy. I want to add a large area rug and also what do I put on the ledge going downstairs?

Two matching mirrors yes. Not tables. I’d do something blocking the blocks. Like a console. And maybe a pouf or mini bench on the left side of the door. Leave the ledge empty imo.

Mirrors are boring unless they reflect something attractive. I don't see any glass blocks.

I'd add wall art. I like the piece that you have. Leave the ledge empty. Console tables just get in the way.

We need to see the door and glass blocks in question.

    Leave the ledge empty.

I’d like to see how far the blocks extend to the stairs. Would putting something there block the staircase? I’m a less is more person too. If you don’t love the decor or it’s not serving a purpose, you don’t need it. A small bench seems the most useful but it may block the steps.

here is a closer view of glass blocks. I'm torn whether to put a bench or narrow cabinet in front of the blocks. that wall is 48" wide

I have one of these in my home, a space smaller than yours. It’s from Overstock— they have other colors also... I just picked one that appears to match your bannister color.

Have you placed anything like tape on the floor to outline size of tables?

    this is W 36" / D 12" / H 32" shaped like half moon demilune for 133.

Cover the glass block with a nice contact paper or paint it to look like art. Get a round storage ottoman in the corner next to it

Then hang a shelf/console above it. The shelf can have hooks to hang bags if desired

On the small wall where you have the wreath hang a mirror either round like the wreath or oval or narrow floor length. On the opposite side on the other small wall by the door put a coat hanger disguised as art

With optional a second identical ottoman where the little table is.

Cover the entire area with one rug. Optional on the ledge you can rest another large art(also secured to wall) to complete the look. Or leave it empty

I like simple elegant decor, not too busy.”

    To simplify the area, I’d:

Remove wreath, and the decor on ledge.

Put a small round table or pedestal here, possibly with a live plant on it to bring in a bit of organic interest:

Remove table from other side of door.

    Bigger rug.

Add art, hooks, whatever on wall above pedestal.

Don’t call attention to glass block by trying to cover it up with furniture. The area is busy with that and the railing above, keep things simple. If the glass can’t be changed, ignore it.

Nothing on ledge, but I’d put a larger piece of art above it.

A beautifully patterned rug, with subtle colors, would provide warmth and texture to all the hard lines and surfaces.

(Rugs from Rejuvenation and PB, just using as examples.)

So ... very minimal furniture, nice rug with warm colors in it, and keep the eye up with art on walls instead of adding more stuff below.

Yes, the door is to the garage. I have double coat closets at top of stairs. My mind is working double time with all these great suggestions. I agree with the blocks being busy with railings above them. I love patterned area rugs but my tile seems to busy for one. Here is a closeup.

I don’t think it’s too busy at all, I think a rug pulling out the colors of it will enhance it, and nicely/softly distract from some of the busier elements around it. But it’s your house, you need to be happy with it. :)

If you like the look there are lots of natural fiber rugs with more texture than pattern and they come in various sizes/colors. Some examples

I think a nice rug with some color or texture would be all that I would do. The walls on either side of the door seem very narrow, and you said you like "simple elegant decor, not too busy." The wreath seems too cramped and the antithesis of "simple." The glass blocks and spindles look very busy as it is, so I wouldn't add anything else. It is quite a small foyer. Nothing is needed on the ledge, but a larger piece of art on the wall would be nice.

Pretty foyer. Remove wreath and knickknacks to simplify. Add a bench to sit on to put on your shoes. Keep shoes under the bench and away from the tripping area at the base of the stairs.
