paint depth perception

So I love the really dark colors on the paint strips, but obviously won’t be using them for my whole house. Is there something I should know about the hues or certain shades that will best give some of the lighter colors that deep richness and depth I like in the darker colors?? We are building a very open concept plan with 10’ ceilings and lots of windows, plus hubby and I both lean towards the darker shades, so I feel like maybe I can squeak by with fairly dark, but don’t want it to feel closed in and claustrophobic either if that makes any sense!! For example.. I love the rich gold undertones of sw status or sw van dyke brown, but then when I go up a few shades on the color strip it’s just a blah grayish brown color without that deep tone to it! Also might add that I don’t have a knack for decorating nor do I like a lot of stuff so like my paint to add color to my house instead of lots of ‘accessories’. Thanks to anyone that can help make sense of all this!!
