I just finished repainting and repairing all the walls in my house, and If I see someone headed for a wall with a hammer and a picture hook, I wil l viciously attack them!

Take heed at what you put on your wall. It will leave permanent damage or need some real repair finesse.

Hanging things on your walls or from the ceiling has some real issues.

People generally hang pictures too high. Eye level please.

The small shelf should be removed. Find art that you love -- not something that matches the furniture or goes with the throw pillows -- but art that pleases you in some way each time you look at it. Look for one or two large format pieces, and center them on that wall. Enjoy.

Oh, and don't be afraid to hang things. Nails make holes, sure - but that's why spackling and touch-up paint were invented. It's not hard to fill nail holes when you move something, and in my opinion having art on the walls for enjoyment far outweighs any little indication that something was ever hung up.

Cut out paper silhouettes of what you are thinking about hanging. Position them, first, with tape on the wall. Play with placement. Then, and only then…after you have a satisfying vignette, hang them. Look into Command Hooks instead of nails. Less damaging…if they can hold the weight of what you hang on them. And, I agree…remove the little shelf. Focus on art for the wall.

I have spent way too many hours repairing wall damage. After redoing so much of the wall and the trim, I threaten anyone to even brush up against them. i am going to protect them like a mamma bear.

I tell hubs that he is only allowed to touch the doorknobs and the stair rails and nothing more.

Since I am the one who does all the work, I am the one who sets all of the rules.

First it is just a small nail for the frame hook. Then, it is two larger ones for something bigger, then, it is wall anchors for the shelf. Now you have gone way beyond that bit of spackling for the tiny nail hole. You remove those hollow wall anchors and that is a mess to patch. And, if you dont have the orginal paint, you are out of luck. It is going to require filling, curing, and smoothing around a wall anchor hole. it may even require two passes before you have to get out the paint.

We even had heavy mirrors on the wall. I got rid of all of those.

I had a heavy framed piece that gave way and fell off the wall, taking out the thermostat. That was the catalyst for my newly issued decree. No more of that.

Things that are not anchored to the wall are easy to move around, to change out and they dont require two days time and a mess to patch.
