We have a planter box to the right of the front door, which separates the entryway from the living room. We are remodeling and installing new tile for the entryway and new flooring throughout the remainder of the home. This would be an excellent time to remove the 1970's planter box. It would open the room and look more updated. If we remove the planter box, it would not effect privacy when the door is opened because it swings open the other direction.

My question is that the planter box keeps the door from hitting our living room furniture on the other side. If the planter box is gone, when the door is opened and it is windy outside the door could hit the furniture with photos etc. and break them. Our living room is not very wide to begin with so moving the furniture further to the right would make our living room even narrower. Is there some way to keep the door from swinging without looking tacking? I really want to upgrade our house and not have anything unsightly. We do not want to drill holes in our new tile so a self adhesive door stopper would be preferred.
