Master bedroom layout

Hi everyone, thanks in advance for your help! We are currently finalizing plans for our forever home and the master bedroom has me so frustrated, it just seems a little boring. I've included a picture of the space we have currently designed. It's not huge but it should be enough for an ensuite (shower no bath) and some form of closet (we are open to walk in or built in style). Neither of us has a ton of clothes so we don't need too much closet space. Window placement can change, but the door needs to stay in about the same location. We would love it if the bed could face the window as we have a beautiful view. We would also love to have room for a comfy chair somewhere. I'd love the hear your thoughts! Thanks!

Hiring a local architect will benefit you greatly, even if it is to eliminate the direct view into master bedroom from public spaces. An architect to help you design a home that meets your needs and fits your site is a good investment.

Thank you Mark. We have gotten quotes from several architects in out area and unfortunately its not feasible within our budget.

I've had a few people suggest I flip the design so the bathroom is adjacent to the the living room and make the closet a reach in or built ins. This would create a hallway which would increase privacy from the main area. Thoughts?

I think the flip you're describing makes sense. It'll give you a buffer between the bedroom and the living room (and walk-in closets make good, absorbent sound barriers). We did something similar with our master bedroom here: https://amodernmountainhome.com/2020/12/23/our-blueprints/

My thoughts are if this portion og the house needs help most likely the rest of the house needs help. You could start a new thread posting the floor plans and exterior elevations to get other people's advice; but as always . . .

WARNING: Posting your entire floor plan opens you up to facts you may not want to know, but should. Be prepared for suggestions that will make for a better design. Keep a thick skin, open mind, sense of humor, and a glass of wine within arms reach. You may not enjoy it, but everyone else will and you will be better off in the long run if you heed well the advice.

Not a Pro nor have I ever built a house but I think with even the lowest budget you need an architect. There is so much involved in building a house than "a boring MBR". One thing your "forvever" home needs to consider is aging. Your door ways should be 36" wide to accommodate walkers, etc

Maybe you can move the closet to the living room wall and have the bath all along the back wall.

A good draftsman should be able to call out and correct design issues (such as 36” door widths). Mine did, with my first set of plans (which are amazing but for other reasons I’m back to the drawing board). Architects are fantastic, but they are expensive and not necessary providing you have a solid draftsman and great contractor. Don’t shoot the messenger - these are the words of my contractor who has been building custom homes for decades. He prefers working with a draftsman and recommended an excellent one for me to use.

If you are nervous about posting your house design, you should be a lot more nervous about building it.

I like Houssaon's second sketch better - it also solves the issue that you'd placed the toilet right behind the headboard of your bed. Not good, unless you like listening to your partner flush while you try to remain asleep!

    Do post the entire house.
