"before" and "after" of the entryway of a home on Lake Barcroft

A dated traditional staircase that blocked the light and occupied most of the space in the Entry Foyer of this home was updated to an open-riser stair with modern railings that changed the look and feel of the house and allowed the light to enter from both sides of the house. I guess I'm traditional, I love the original :) the updated version reminds me of a stairway on a large cruise ship :)

I like the update a lot cleaner looking, Perhaps a series of large modern vases could be added aside the staircase, and a larger rug.

It does have clean lines, but still just not my taste. Also, the original is NOT dated :) it's been classic for probably 100+ years and will continue to be classic.

I love the new look! So modern and with clean lines! So european. Some day I'll do the same to this boring and predictable looking house!

Not my style, but it looks very tastefully done.

I like the before, in 10 years the after will be outdated... classic never goes out of style.

just like the wrought iron stair rail, they were all the rage when I was in my early teens 1960's possibly until mid 70's. Luckily my parents didn't have the money to replace theirs, because it eventually went out of style, and all the homes that took out the beautiful wood railings, found themselves putting in new ones again :) At least now when they use them, they mix the wood with the wrought iron

You are of course entitled to your "traditionalist" opinion. We are here for clients that want to breathe new life to dated and tired homes- I understand modern, streamlined architecture is not for everyone, but variety is the spice of life! Modern design, when execured correctly, is timeless, and is not dependent on the ephemeral nature of any passing style. In my humble opinion...

Much better!! Funny how most plp shy away from having a new staircase put in or don't even consider it as an option... and look at the difference!! thanks for sharing!

I see nothing "dated and tired" in the before picture.... The after picture, while very nice, in my humble opinion, will not stand the test of time. With every decade contemporary style changes... and I frankly view this as contemporary rather than true modern.

I'm not saying that the change isn't pleasing, it's just that I prefer the classical line of the before. To be sure it could use a bit of an update... but the bones of the entry in the before will hold it's own while the other will become the dated and tired in 10 or 20 years.
