Since the PNW is probably the wholesale and retail nursery capitol of the universe, you will have a lot of competition. I'd focus in on just a couple of plant species that are not widely addressed by other growers....you really need a niche market to succeed. And start out small :-)

I'd also suggest you locate and read So You Want To Start a Nursery, by Tony Avent. Widely available on Amazon and in bookstores ($20 or less), this is the bible for budding nursery owners!

Right, I noticed that, lots of sellers and nurseries all over. I'm not discouraged at all however because of the online market, people will buy from all over the U.S. For locally I will definitely take your advice and find something that may be overlooked by the growers here. If you're going after an online market, you'll need information about USDA rules about shipping plants and also the restrictions for the states where you will be shipping plants.

Cold hardy citrus might be an area to specialize in (Yuzu, Kabosu, Ichang papeda, Keraji mandarin, citrandarin). (citrus has special rules, if selling to certain states) Special hardier varieties of Russian pomegranates. Ferns.

Maybe the rarer varieties you can get, the more valuable they will be and people will seek you out. Cloudberries and lingonberries.

If you have greenhouse facilities, Dicksonia antarctica tree ferns can be profitable to grow. Many gardeners want a tropical look in their yard. (They can survive outside in zone 8 if you wrap the crown in a burlap bag for insulation during the winter)

Green gage plums sell out really fast, hard to find and sought after.

How about some of the rarer magnolia varieties like Iolanthe and Black Tulip?

If you can get your hands on Phoebe zhennan from China, that might be a great ornamental tree for this climate, like a camphor tree but taller, slimmer profile, just a little more cold tolerance. And it would be rare.

Maybe try to grow special cold hardy gardenia varieties, like Summer Snow and Crown Jewel? They are slow to grow in this climate, but would be fast inside a greenhouse.
