If you are can't situate a free-standing tub to allow plenty of clearance on all sides for easy cleaning, then you really shouldn't try to include one in your plan. You should be able to clean the floor, wall and outside of the tub without having to book a chiropractor's appointment. Free-standing tubs were originally designed to stand virtually in the middle of a bathing room. Unfortunately the desire for them now sees them crammed into spaces which are much too small and make proper cleaning very difficult. A well-designed built-in tub doesn't detract from a bathroom. There are plenty of great designs to view in the photos on Houzz.

Yes, it would be better to center the new freestanding tub. You will need to redo a portion of the shower as you won't have the tub deck for the shower glass to sit on.

Thanks Janelle, I understand your point. I could do a smaller freestanding tub that was not centered on the window and there would be about a foot of space on each end or with the size I have picked out, not centered there would only be 9 inches. I will reconsider keeping the drop in tub and surround as is. I hate the tile surround and the cost of a slab of stone plus finding something to go with the granite I'm keeping on the counters seemed like it might cost more that way than just doing freestanding.

Cage design, I will be redoing the shower no matter what I do. Hate the tile and it doesn't slope correctly. Are you saying center the tub on the window or the whole space?

This is a picture of what one of our neighbors did. The tub they picked is larger than the one I am looking at and it isn't centered on anything.

You don't have measurements on your drawing -- how wide is the smaller portion of the shower? I think you would regret going below 36" if you expect to shower most of the time.

As to the tub, I'm not sure that centering is important in an asymmetric space. If you get a smaller tub to shift over, you could always put some shelves on the other side, or a stool to hold your towel and loofah. Or you could put a freestanding tub filler in that space, to make it look intentional. Or extra towel bars, etc.

ACM the narrower section is 3'9" and the other space is 4'5". I don't really want to make it narrower and most like I would only go down to 4'. We are adding a door and additional shower head where right now is the drying off area. My poor hubby gets cold with no door and we like to shower together sometimes. Optimally I would like to leave the dimensions of the shower the same but I don't want it to look wrong. We rarely use the tub anyway and so the shower should take priority.

I don't think it would look odd if you don't center the tub.

Maybe if I put something on the wall beside the window it won't look so off balance. Looking at the picture of it currently it looks off balance the way it is and I can't say I ever thought about it before. I'm overthinking things again.
