I had a home built last year in New Jersey. The stairs to the 2nd floor have been terrible to climb. I measured them recently, something I should have done sooner, and the risers are 8 1/4”. I believe code is 7 3/4" maximum. Someone told me that New Jersey’s code used to be 8/1/4” but has since been updated to 7 3/4" like the rest of the country. For days I’ve been trying to find updated documentation online to verify the correct code but have been unsuccessful. I’m apprehensive about contacting my township because I have not gotten my final inspection yet. I don’t want to open a can of worms. If the stairs are not code, I’d like them corrected....they're horrible and possibly dangerous, but at the same time, I doubt the builder would cooperate. According to the contract, the house has to pass inspection, but the builder has been awful to deal with along. I’d probably be stuck with a long drawn out litigation or stuck having to fix them myself. I can’t imagine the cost being less than $20,000. This would be a major construction job. The whole staircase would have to be removed, most likely destroying the wall structure and sheet rock in the process. We had the original floor plan with a landing at the bottom of the staircase with an additional step off the landing. Both my husband and I calculated the stairs over and over again before we submitted our plans and we felt that the stairs would never fit without at least a landing. When the plan came back without a landing or an addition step, the builder assured me we didn’t need them. I should have measured them immediately after the house was built, but didn’t. My husband developed dementia last year, thereby pushing the remaining construction and decisions on me. Pretty overwhelming for one person. Does anyone know the updated New Jersey code for risers or know where I can find that information?
