I have a chess board that has been in the family for 60 years. The squares are, I think, maple and walnut. It's in good shape, but scuffed up a bit and I wanted to give it a light sand and refinish it. The one flaw is that the light squares in 3 of the rows have always been a lighter shade than in the other 5 rows. I'm wondering is there is some way to even this out in the sanding and refinishing process. I don't mind if the light squares become darker as long as the overall shade is uniform. Thanks.
